THE ORPHEUS WRECK.
SIXTY-NINTH ANNIVERSARY. Tho 69th anniversary of the wreck of the steam corvette Orpheus on the Manukau bar falls to-morrow. Out of a complement- of 256 officers, seamen, marines and boys, 185 lives v.-ere lost. The vessel was entering the harbour on a wrong course, and struck tho bar in fairly smooth water in broad daylight. I' l9 st-ern-posfc rudder and propeller w ere lost, and after forcing hor wav over the liar, the vessel grounded in deeper water and quickly broke up. Forty men were drowned in a launch which was lowered vover tho side, and those who were saved succeeded in climbing t'o the j:bbootn and dropping into smooth water, where th p y if were picked up. Advice of the wreck was received about 11 p.m. by H.M.S. Harrier, and the steamer Avon was sent to Manukail Heads. Not even a mast was to he seen when day came and the Avon veturned with the survivors to Ouehunga.
