The early estimates of the casualties in the earthquakes at Santiago were greatly exaggerated- An official announcement states that six people "were MUed and 30 injured. The damage to property "was extensive, few buildings escaping. The walls of the gaol fell in, bat most of the inmates escaped injury. Apparently the greatest damage was done in the business section. The fall damage is estimated at mare than £2.000.000 by the Governor, Dr. Barcelo. The puhlic buildings alone vera damaged to the extent of £600,000. The city was practically disserted tonight. the people having Sed to outlying districts, whence they fear to return lest there should be a recurrence of the earthquakes. There were nine shocks between midnight on Tnesdav and dawn to-day. The Maror ordered the gas and electricity services to be cut off to avoid fire?. A message from Havana says the Cuban House of Representatives has voted £200.000 for emergency relief.
