CITY RATE PAYMENTS.
OVER HALF RECEIVED. A total of £319,075 in rates was received by the City Council up to and including Wednesday of this week. This represented 53.6 per cent, of the amount collectable. This information was supplied to the City Council last evening by the Mayor, Mr. G. W. Hutchison, who said that at February 3 of last year the amount received was £465,699. so that this year £146,624 less had been paid. This need not occasion alarm, said the Mayor, because the municipal elections had delayed the issue of the rate demands, which were sent out two weeks later than usual. The 10 per cent, penalty was therefore two weeks later in operating.
