MINING CLAIMS CASE.

NO FURTHER PROTECTION.

AN APPLICATION REFUSED,

[BY TELEGRAPH. —OWN' CORRESPONDENT.]

THAMES, Thursday.

An application for protection over six special quartz claims on Tararu Creek for six months was made in the Warden's Court this morning by James' Henry Fleming, agent, Auckland. Hie applicant had already had six months' protection. In evidence Fleming stated that J. 11. Lysnar was on the way to England with particulars of these claims, intending to lioat a company with English capital to work the claims as a low-grade ore proposition. The applicant maintained that the ore was of complex nature, but lie was willing to allow tributers to work on the ground. The application was opposed by I ercy Hill, who stated in evidence that his father was once manager of the Watchman mine and crushed 1000 tons monthly 14 years ago. 'ihcro was no difficulty with the ore. Hill applied for forfeiture on the ground that the claims had not, been manned in any way since Fleming acquired the claims. Tbc warden. .Mr. F. W. Platts. S.M., refused further protection as Fleming was evidently holding the ground for.speculative purposes. Regarding forfeiture, the warden reserved decision for a fortnight. He refused to grant protection even during that period. \

There was unusual activity in mining applications to-day. Prospecting licences were granted over areas totalling 42 acres on Karaka Creek and 24 acres at Mata.
