FIFTY YEARS AGO.

EXTRACTS FROM THE HERALD. .. •> ' The following are extracts from the New Zealand Hepald of February 6. 1882:It is not strange that scarlatina, whoop ing cough and other diseases are spreading so rapidly in Auckland when one notices the recklessness and gross want of thought shown by parents in sending their children to public school, Sunday School and church, and other gatherings while afflicted by such complaints. In one of the city churches yesterday a child had to be taken out, suffering from whooping cough. The " sotto voce " re marks of some parents present who were not anxious that their children should catch the complaint were of a character sadly out of joint with the day and place, but if ever the Recording Angel blots out a slip with a tear it must be in some such case as above. A new field for the sportsman has beeP opened in the colony, namely, deer stalking. The Nelson Acclimatisation Society has opened a deer-stalking season, extending over a month, during portions of February and March. . The New Zealand Railway Departmefl has resolved to have 20 large cars built o the American principle. The cars are 4u to be built-in the colony. It is computed that at least Wj" bnshels of beans will be available from t Christchurch district alone for export, England, where they should find a re»°J •ale at good prices.
