THE CITY COUNCIL.
COMPENSATION FOR LAND. SETTLEMENT OF TWO CLAIMS. Reference was made at the meeting of the Auckland City Council last evening to the death of the late 'Mr. James Stichbury, formerly a member of the council, and a resolution of condolence with the relatives was carried. A similar resolution was carried in respect of the late Sir. John Kenderdine, who was a co-opted member of the Council's Library Committee
The settlement of two claims for compensation for land taken for city improvements was reported by the Mayor, Air. G. \V. Hutchison, and approved by the council. One was for land taken at Kohimarama in connection with the construction of Tamaki Drive. The claim made by the owner, Mr. J. Beaver, was for £2OO, plus costs (£10), for land taken, in addition to which buildings valued at £4l were removed by the council. The offer of settlement made by the Mayor and accepted was for £l6O. The other claim was in respect of land taken at the corner of Karangahape Road and Belgium Street for the improvement of the corner and a sum of £SOO had been agreed upon. The Auckland Rowing Association applied for permission to use a portion of the road at Tamaki Drive on the occasion of the Auckland Provincial championships on March 5. It requested that 200vds. of the footpath be roped off at the finishing point to enable it to make a collection among the patrons. It was decided to reply that as the road was not yet dedicated it would be necessary for the association to apply to the Public Works Department for permission.
