BOYS WITHOUT WORK.
SPECIAL CLASSES SCHEME.
PROPOSAL BY MR. T. U. WELLS.
A proposal for flip, establishment of special classes at centres in tho city anrl suburbs to provide instruction for boys unable to obtain work after leaving the primary schools was outlined by Mr. T. U. Wells at yesterday's meeting of Hie Auckland Education Board.
Mr. Wells said that owing to the depression, many boys were at a "loose end" and might not have the necessary qualifications when work became available. He advocated the establishment of centres where boys could bo grouped, free of school atmosphere, and receive instruction in woodwork, boot repairing, book-keeping, elementary economics and English literature. The Employers' Association might be able to have the boys shown round factories.
Tho speaker said the Future Farmers' Committee, the Rotary Club and the Young Men's Christian Association, which were interested in tho welfare of boys, might be able to co-operate with tho Headmasters' Association. Possibly some of the board's unemployed teachers could be absorbed by such a scheme. Building accommodation would present no great difficulty. The chairman, Mr. A. Burns, remarked that the boys wanted employment rather than extra tuition.
Mr. H. 8. W. King agreed with the chairman, but said, failing employment, additional tuition was desirable. The matter was referred to the executive committee for full consideration.
