FIELDS AT GISBORNE.

SUNNY SKY AND EARTHQUAKE.

Fields for the opening of the Gisborne Racing Club's Summer Meeting to-day are very satisfactory, and there should be some interesting contests. The meeting concludes on Saturday. The following horses may be well supported : Te Hapara Hack Handicap.—Tai Ao, Tnrcha, Lord Ain tree. First Hurdles.—Russet Moor. Simeon. Flying Handicap.—White Wings, Sunny Song. Hack Gold Cup.—Sunny Sky, Earthquake, Bugle Call. Carroll Memorial.—"White Wings, Autumn Sun. Maiden Scurry.—Good Hunting, Princess Star. Park Hack Handicap.—Aiguillo, Bugle Call. Little Wonder. Following are the acceptances:—

[bj: telegraph.—press association.] CHRISTC'HURCK. Wednesday. At the monthly meeting of the Canterbury District Committee it was recommended that the jockey's licence of C. E. Eastwood he withdrawn, but that lie. he granted permission to work in a training stabia. A PROMISING GALLOPER. SOLOIST REGAINING FORM.

As a two-year-old last season Soloist looked to he- a good horse in the making, but unfortunately leg trouble came asm list him and lie could not be trained for early sprint? engagements. It »vus not until the Te Awamiitu meeting in December that Soloist made his first appearance as a three-year-old, and. although lie was not nearly reudy, he demonstrated that he lias lost none 01" his" pace by showing up prominently in tlio early Btages. Soloist has had another race in Ihe meantime, and, with the work he has had in the past few weeks, lie should now be getting close to good racing condition, 30 that he may he worth watching at the coming country meetings. Soloist is in on the minimum in the Walton Handicap at, Mat'imata and should give a good account of himself.

NOTES FROM EVERYWHERE.

TRACK AND STABLE GOSSIP.

Cood things were expected of Instalment when he scored at his first attempt as a three-year-old, but in the meantime ho has had to oppose fairly good fields and his form has not, been up to expectations. Instalment should appreciate his return to weaker company in the Railway Hack Handicap at Matamata. and his prospectß of success should bo very bright.

Some of Cargen's efforts over hurdles have been very promising and, although lie failed to do quite as well as expected at Taumarunui, he is an improver who soon be displaying much better form. Cargeu will be more seasoned than a number 01 the horses lie will be meeting in the Tirau Hack Hurdles at Matamata. and that race should give him a good chance to open his winning account.

An interesting acceptor for the Tirau Hurdles at Matamata is West Abbey, who has not raced for a considerable time. A few seasons ago West Abbey registered some creditable performances at country lnoetiu.TS ami at his heat he w.is a Xairly useful hurdler. However, it is doubtful whether after his long spell from racing he will bo forward enough in condition to give any serious trouble in his coming engagement.

Two New Zealand-bred horses. Polydectes, and Imarosebud, were among jhe winners •it Goodwood. Western Australia, on January 23. Polydectes, by King Mark from I tamos, was successful in the Goodwood Purse, 1 mile, and Imarosebud, by Romeo from Iniaribbon, scored in the Goodwood Handicap, U miles. Polydectes will be well remembered as the horse who figured in the triple dead-heat with Broad Acre and Ganymede in the R.unpehu Handicap at Ti-entham in January, 1928.

When Persham won his way ont of hack company by winning the Takapnna Plate in November it was thought that he would not be long in scoring in better class, but the opposition he inet in the open sprint races at Ellerslio proved too strong, and he ran unplaced. Persham should -be more at home in the company he will meet at Matamata on Saturday and he may show un prominently in whichever rncp he starts. He is in both the Walmroa Handicap and the Walton Handicap, and tbj; distance of the latter race should suit him to a nicety.
