DAMAGE BY FIRE.
A LANDMARK DISAPPEARS. LIBRARY COLLECTION LOST. [BY TELEGRAPH. —PRESS ASSOCIATION.] DUNEDIN, Wednesday. The well-known landmark, Riccarton Hall, at East Taieri, with its library collection commenced in the early 'eighties, together with an adjoining residence, was destroyed by fire yesterday. There was only a small insurance on tha hall. SUBURBAN GRASS FIRES. TWO GOOD SAVES MADE. Two grass fires broke out in suburban areas about three o'clock yesterday afternoon, bui, no damage resulted, although the adjacent property was in danger. There was an outbreak in a vacant section in Lambeth Road, off Dominion Road. The fire swept through the yard behind a neighbouring house and blistered the paint on ' the building. The Mount Eden brigade, which was summoned, suppressed the fire without difficulty. A blaze, which is believed to have been caused by a spark from a passing locomotive, burned off an area of grass alongside the northern railway line between Dominion Road and Kingsland, endangering the footbridge across the line in Onslow Road. The flames were extinguished by the Mount Albert brigade before any damage resulted.
