THE TROTTING TRACK.

DOINGS OF EPSOM HORSES, j KEWPIE'S TRIUMPH IMPROVES. DAD'S HOPE AND EXPLOSION. The appearance of the programme for the Auckland Trotting Club's February meeting has caused increased activity at Lpsom. and, although trainers are not setting their charges any very serious tasks, many horses are now working usefully in preparation for next month's meeting. Kewpie'a Triumph, who gave a taste of his quality at the Christmas meeting by Winning three events in splendid style, looks none tho worsa for his solid racing and. is in fine order at present. Kcwpip'a Triumph is now getting back among the higher-grado pacers, but, as he ia likely to chow still further improvement, ho should win more races for J. Gee. Jersey Thorpe, who has been lacing well, if a little unluckily, at recent meetings, in now trained at Epsom, having been purchased by Mr. J. Mahoiioy, owner of Gaza. Jersey Thorpe is a useful sprinter and is a horso likely to go well in saddle races. R. A. Shepherd has kept Prince Ltawah jogging along sinco his unsuccessful trip to Claudelands last month. Prince Etawah has not raced up to expectations this season, but he has displayed sufficicjit form to indicate he will do bettor as tho season advances. Prince Etawah is a bad traveller who does not do well away from homo, and he may race bettor on his home track next month, when tho alow-class races should bo to his liking. W. Clifton hns rccommissioned Explosion and Dad's Hope Both horses have benefited by the short let up they have enjoyed.. Dad's Hope train 3d off just before tho summer mooting nt Epsom and raced a lot below his October form. He will probably bo seen to better advantage next timo out. Explosion's exhibitions of trotting at tho summer meeting were a big improvement on his previous ones and he will only require to repeat the form to gain a winning bracket shortly. Nothing very strenuous ic being exacted from Auto Machine, who is looking a, picture. Auto Machino found tho oppo : silion a shade too strong at tho cup meeting, but was not quite at his best, owing to the. short interruption in his preparation. As the classes at the coming meeting are slower. Auto Machine will bo conceding rather bigger handicaps in his coining engagements, but the opposition may not be as strong, and the. chances are that he will race well. Nella Dillon is a regular attendant at Alexandra Park, but she is doing only very light work. She has not 6truck her hcsl, form this season, although sho improved with her racing during the recent meeting. The solid training given Nella Dillon for two-miles events has evidently affected her brilliancy, but sho in staying better than formerly and the acquisition of stamina will stand her in good stead when the country cun races come lip for decision . Glandore is holding his well and A.' Mo.Garrv intends to race him in some of the country cups. In sp.ito of .many years of failure. Glandore. appears to have taken n. new lefiso of life. and. iudgihg by his pound displays at Hamilton and Epsom last, month, his prospects of adding to bis miccesses are at least,-reasonable. ■ After a few weeks' holiday, Margaret "Wallace is back nt work again. Although she failed in get. any priz" money at. tho Auckland Christmas meeting. Margaret Wallace raced fairly well and in less pretentions company she should have a good chance of success. Cleao. who did not suffer nnv ill effects from her recent mishap n 1 F.nsom, is working along steadily for G. AYebb. Since she last raced Cleao lias put on a lot, of surplus condition, but she should improve onick'y in the next few weeks. Another of "Webb's (earn who is working steadily is Stormy Mnck "Webb has also recommissioned the trotter Lord Hnhlnne TP] AWAMUTTJ "NOTES. CANDIDATES FOR TAKAPUNA. KAIRURI'S GOOD PROGRESS. [FROM OUR OWN' CORRESPONDENT.] TE AWAMUTU, Tuesday. There has' been little fast, work on the Te Awsmtiiu tracks-in the past, few weeks. Many of the horses were placed on the easy list, after the holidays, However, murh useful pace work ha 3 been accomplished and many of (Vie horses will Bonn be moving along In earnest again in view of the coming meetings, of which Tnknpuna and Matamata will be two of (he'first, to claim attention. There will ho a fairly strong contingent going from here to Takapuna. Kairuri has been getting through some very useful tasks on the plough. His recent racing has evidently done him no harm, as he seems more settled now than .formerly. If he maintains his present progress,.he will havo to be reckoned with in the high-weight events at Tuknpuna. Another who is progressing pleasingly is Leitrim, who was by no means disgraced nt Ellerslie. Leitrim has benefited by his recent racing and should be seen in a favourable light in the sprint events at. Takapuna. where he has almost invariably raced well. Two other local candidates for the sprints at Takapuna nre Mnrechnl and Eager Kose. They were both winners nt Thames, and the immediate prospects of Eager Rose are bright, as her winning effort was only her second start this season. T'egaway continues to work nlong in his usual good style, and. in spito of his increasing years, shows no signs of losing his brilliancy. However, the fact that ho is right up in the weights will not make it easy for him in his coming engagements. Still, he carries weight well and will have a strong following if started in tho Takapuna Cup. Another Takapuna Cup candidate who has several recent victories to her credit is Limeen. This mare is doing plenty of useful work in good style, but she displays a tendency to go sore, and the firm state of the tracks at present is not entirely in her favour. Limeen should be capable of showing improved form when tho tracks become easier.. H. L. Russell also has another useful sort in Miss Lorraine, who has made wonderful progress since joining his string. Miss Lorraine is training on well and will be difficult to beat in tho juvenile events at Takapuna. Her ability to begin very fast should be to her advantage on the suburban course. Bambury, who is in A. Cook's charge, is looking in great- heart.. ITe has been doing very useful work and he may be given his first race in the Calliope Handicap at Taknpunn. Bambury is smart and should give a good account of himself, although lack of racing experience may be against him. King's Knave, who has shown promising form recently, will in all probability be seen in action again nt Takapuna. As he has been working usefully since his return from Ellerslie, a win. for him may not be long delnyed. ' J. Pnnl also has another horse iri his fi'tnble who possesses a lot' of pace. This is Shnmgar. who is unfortunately unsound, and his trainer hns not yet succeeded in getting him to the r>ost. Tho two-year-old fillv Arawa Rose, bv Musketoon from "Wee .Rose, is carrying a very bright appearance. The half-sister to Eager Rose is getting through some very useful tnsks and she shows fair promise. The colt by Lapidary—Lily Bank is showing promise and stretches out in very pleasing fashion in his work. He will most likely be having his first outing in the autumn. MISHAP DURING RACE. SEVERAL HORSES SUFFER. [by TEr.EGn.vrir, —n acino nEPonTEa.] WELLINGTON, "Wednesday.
