SWIMMING ITEMS.

AUCKLAND CHAMPIONSHIPS. CARNIVAL ON TUESDAY NEXT. BRILLIANT INTERMEDIATE BOY. Swimming of a standard equally as high in comparison as that which was witnessed at the Auckland intermediate and junior championships last week is anticipated at the senior championship meeting in the Tepid Baths next Tuesday evening. Ad least two New Zealand records will, it is thought, be broken, while other times should be better generally than those registered in previous years. ! The present national champion, G. Brid- | son, seems certain to retain his 100 yds. ! and quarter-mile titles. His victory in the 440 yds. event should be a comfortable one, but in the sprint contest solid opposition is iikely to come from R. Thomas, J. Enwright and R. Erankham. j At recent carnivals Bridson has convincI inaiy demonstrated that his speed is j greater than it has ever been before, so I that enthusiasts feel sure he will set new I figures in each of his swims. The existing | record for a quarter-mile, om 16 4-ss, was : established by Bridsou, and the 100 yds. ! time, made by I. W. Cameron, is 55 4-ss. i The 220vds. breast-stroke championship I should be productive of an interesting con- | test. The title-holder, J. Magee. won last | season in the creditable time of I and will need to be at his best in order to i ward oft the challenge of T. Lowe, who has i been moving well of late. Ills backj stroke title should be won again by A. ; Raper. Diving Championship. i (>n account of W. Hassan's absence from ! the estv for business reasons the men s j .iivins "title will be undefended. R. L'Vankham, the intermediate champion c[ ! last year, is regarded as having tne I brightest chances of success in this cvei^-;-o excellent have been tiie recent exhibi- ; 'ions of Miss Marie Farquhar, the New Zealand 100 yds. lady champion, that her supporters entertain high hopes of her : breaking Miss Ena Stocklev's Dominion i record of 65s in the sprint championship ! race. Without d .übt Miss Farquhar is in ! splendid form and, having such worthy j opponents as Misses N. Stratton. P. Robj ertson, M. Smith, B. Lewin and J. Bell I to act as her pacemakers, she has a fine i opportunity of arhicvine a most popular : success by lowering Miss Slockley s lei cord, which has remained undefeated for | nearlv three years. i In all probability Miss Farquhar will not be a starter in the quarter-mile contest, the result of which is uncertain, owirtx to the absence of the holder, Miss E. L hampion. The lOOvds. ladies' backstroke event should be a closely contested race, M:ss Farquhar. the holder, having as her rivals Misses N". Stratton and B. Lewin. A small field may contest the i-Cyds. breaststroks event, which seems to oe within the grasp of Miss 31. 0 Meara. Challenge from Canterbury. Unusually keen interest is being evinced I bv followers of the sport in the selection I of the team that will represent Auckland at the national championship meeting in ■ Tim am next month, lhe reason is that 1 Auckland's greatest rival in the swimminc i world, Canterbury, intends to make a bold ' bid to deprive Auckland of the Ya!d- ---! hurst Shield. Local supporters realise that ! unless an exceptionally strong team is sent ' from Auckland the southern centre, on ac- ! count of its superiority in respect to men's i swimming generally, and water polo, will I be successful in its challenge for the shield. ' Whether possession of the trophy con- . stitutes any real advantage has often been questioned, but there is n° doubt, that j Auckland enthusiasts will not look kindly ! on any seeming indifference with regard to i representation at Timaru by a powerful ; team. When tiie Auckland Centre meets j after next Tuesday's carnival for the purj pose of selecting the team it would be | well advised to concentrate on ladies' | events by nominating at least three reprei sentatives, provided each has a reasonable j chance of gaining a minimum of two ! points. . I The brilliant performances ot j Crump, the 15-year-old intermediate bov ] champion, and the breaking of three New I Zealand records bv other swimmers at. the i ~nd intermediate and junior championship carnival last week, have caused much excitement- in local swimming circles. The sterling swimming leaves no idoubt that its representatives _ will regain I for Anckland the War Memorial Shield at i the Dominion championship meeting which ! commences in Wellington on Friday. Crump's Performances. Crump's times. 58 4-5s for ICO yards and 2m 34 2-5s for 220 yards, the latter being a record, class him as the fastest boy swimmer ever developed in New Zealand. In fact, few countries are fortunate enough to possess a boy swimmer of Ins I prowess. Although Crump's were the outstanding swims he is faced with the bard- | est opposition over 100 yards and . —0 j yards* of any member of the Auckland j representative team at the Dominion | championships. * The feats of two Otago boys. W Jarvis ! and R- Geddes, and P. McGrath. Sout.i----i land, place them on almost equal terms j with the Aucklander, and stirring races I should ensue when they meet in compeltI tion. While he will be hard pressed over the shorter distances Crump should be an | e asv winner in the quarter-mile champion- ! ship. In this event Geddes, L. Bullivant j and M. Redman, Hawke s Bay, the titlei holder, shouitl prove to be his foremost I rivals. . j Auckland should dominate the mterI mediate girls" events. Victory in both | the 100 vards and 220 yards should fad l 0 j Miss N." Ludlow, who captured the local j titles in 70 I-5s and 2m 55 l-ss, both ■ times being in advance of any registeied 'by southern girls. I here is, however, a : possibility that. Miss Ludlow will lose the ! 100 vards event to Miss S. Grange, whom : she defeated by a very narrow margin last i week. „ ! j n depriving Miss D. Dowman of the ! honour of being the speediest girl breast- ' stroke swimmer ever produced in this ! country. Miss J. Webster set new record 1 figures" of 61 1-os- for 75 yards, an lini provement of 1- 4-5s on Miss Dowman s s previous mark. Miss is certain t.o enjdv victory at Wellington in the 1 5 ! yards championship. Miss Rainey's Hecords. Following many striking swims during i her career of three years as the junior chamoion, M;ss Edna Rainey fulfilled pio- ' mise 'bv placing to her credit two new records" over 50 yards and 100 yards oi | 31 2-5s and 75s respectively. _ Infusing * great dash in her swimming, Miss Rainey : disposed of her opposition in a convincing i manner, and she demonstrated that she ' has every possibility of regaining this : week the titles she lost at the last Do- ! minion championships. However she will bo fullv extended by Miss W. Newall, the Otago champion, who i is reported to have improved considerably ; since the Otago championships a month j :i! ro, when her times were not so much i behind those of the Auckland girl. Miss I R. Law, Canterbury, will also have to be j considered in these events. | There is a strong likelihood that the ! 100 vards and 220 yards junior boys' j championships will result in Auckland sucj cesses. M. Clearv and A. Pascoe, the ICO 1 yards and furlong Auckland champions | respectively, returned the fairly good j times of 75 3-5s and 3m 12 l-ss, these appearing meritorious enough to assure them a victory in their Wellington engagements. Although she must be* given credit for her good win in the Anckland championship "in 46 l-ss, Miss C. Walters appears to have the smallest chance of winning at Wellington this week. Miss N. Olds. Otago, who has recorded 44 4-ss, seems to be the most likely winner.
