BOOKMAKING CHARGES.
THE FOURTH OFFENCE. TOBACCONIST FINED £IOO. An admission that he had used hi* premises in Hobson Street as a common gaming house was made by Thomas Curran, aged 54, tobacconist, in the Police Court yesterday. Detective Nalder said that at 11 a.m.. on Tuesday, in company with Detective Bowman, he executed a search warrant at accused's premises. Witness found a quantity of betting material, which showed that accused had taken a number of bets in connection with race meetings in various parts of the Dominion. Accused's bookmaking business was not as large as it had been, but it was, nevertheless, fairly extensive. Detective-Sergeant Kelly said accused had been convicted for gaming offences on three earlier occasions. He was last before the Court in October, 1930, when he was fined £IOO. The magistrate. Mr. E. C. Cutten, fined accused £IOO, in default three months' imprisonment. A week was allowed in which to make payment. . Arrested by acting-Detective Bowman shortly before noon yesterday George Henry Wilkinson, aged 41, confectioner, was later charged before two justices with carrvinc on business as a bookmaker. Accused was remanded to appear th s morning. Bail was allowed.
