CHESS CHAMPIONSHIP.
NEW ZEALAND TITLE. GYLES. STILL IN THE LEAD. [BY TELEGRAPH.—PRESS ASSOCIATION.] NAPIER, Wednesday. The Dominion chess championship was continued to-day. Following, are the results of the fifth round:— R. 0. Scott (Wanganui) lost to A. W. Gyles (Wellington). Queen's gambit declined. Gyles, attacking early, gained a rook and two pawns, finishing with a pretty mate. C. J. S. Purdy (New South Wales) beat E. S. ltutherford (Taranaki). Purdy's game was probably his best during tho congress. Although ho had no advantage in material his position was overwhelming for sonic time prior to his opponent's resignation. W. .7, Fairburn (Wellington) lost to G. Gun-rlersen (Melbourne). Queen's pawn game. Gundersen won a pawn and an exchange and had the commanding position. After sundry exchanges he brought off an evidently unexpected mate. >7. A. Erskine (Southland) beat F. K. Kelling (Wellington). Zukertort opening. Kelling castled 011 the queen's side and instituted an attack. Erskine, however, won the exchange on his 20th move and speedily forced (he win. E. 7,. Smith (Napier) drew with K. 17. Sevcrne (Nelson). Max Smith was still a pawn down when the. end of tho game arrived, but was able to draw. 11. N. Maddox (Auckland) beat Iv. O'Halloran (Napier). Irregular opening. Maddox picked up four pawns at intervals and then forced exchanges of all the pieces. J. 0. Giierson (Auckland) beat Rev. A. Miller (Wesfporl). Grierson appeared to change a possible loss to a certain draw and then win. The unfinished game between Grierson and Kelling in the first round resulled in a draw after 94 moves.
