VESSEL REFLOATED.
NEWTON ELM'S CONDITION. NOT SERIOUSLY DAMAGED. (Received December 2S, 9.45 p.nr.) SYDNEY. Dec. 2S. With the aid of two powerful tugs and a very high tide, the stranded freight steamer Newton Elm was refloated at noon to-day. She is now being towed to Sydney for docking. The vessel is making a little water but is not seriously damaged. The Newton Elm, a steel steamer of 4218 tons, owned by the Tyncside Line, Ltd., for which she was built in 1924, went ashore on a sandy shoal on December 20. eight miles from Crescent Head, 180 milss north of Newcastle. The steamer hal sailed from Sydney on the previous Gii route to London. Hie weather was fine but. foggy when she grounded at 9 a.m. She had a crew of 30 No passengers were carried. The cargo consisted partly of huge, cables, which were used in the construction ot the Sydney Harbour bridge.
