SATURDAY'S SALES. RETURN ON INVESTMENTS. Following is a list of Saturday's transactions on Now Zealand Stock Exchanges. In the second, column is given the return, based on the last annual dividend, from investment at the quoted price. In tho case of Government and other redeemable securities the return includes redemption. In calculating the returns on shares in companies which pay their dividends outside New Zealand exchange rates, being liablo to fluctuation, have not been taken into consideration. A feature of this week's Bank of England return is tho increase in the note issue of £4,056,771, whereas for tho corresponding period last year, which included an extra day, the amount was double, namely, £8,080,000. It is too early to form an opinion of tho extent of the Christmas currency demands, but appearances indicate a possibility of withdrawals being restrained in view of the January income tax demands Usually £20,000,000 to £25,000,000 is withdrawn a few weeks before Christmas and returned to tho banks in tfie middle of January. HEMP AND TOW RETURNS. INCREASES DURING NOVEMBER. 1 lie quantitcs of hemp and tow graded last month for export from New Zealand were substantially greater than the amounts graded in November, 1930. The returns for last month issued by the chief hemp grader, Mr. W. Petrich, show that 1247 bales of hemp were graded, as against 1112 bales in the previous November, an increase of 135 bales. Of the total, 770 bales were graded in Wellington, 286 in Bluff. 102 in Auckland, 68 in Blenheim, and 21 in Picton. The grading was as follows:—Good fair, 120 bales (9.62 per cent, of the total); high fair, 285 (22.86 per cent.); low fair, 464 (37.21 per cent.); common, 162 (12.99 per cent.); rejected, 216 (17.32 per cent.). The quantity of tow graded was 335 bales, compared with 297 bales in November, 1930. an increase of 38 bales. Of last month's total, 113 hales were graded, in Bluff, 116 in Wellington, 88 in Blenheim and 12 in Picton. Details are as follows: —First grade, 12 bales (3.58 per cent.) ; second grade, 207 (61.79 per cent.) ; third grade, 102 (30.45 per cent.); condemned, 14 (4.18 per cent.). WELLINGTON BUILDING SOCIETY. DIVIDEND OF 7 PER CENT. The Wellington Permanent Building Society for the year ended November 10 shows a net profit of £4735, an increaso of £729. Adding the amount brought forward from the previous year, there was available £4898, out of which an interim dividend amounting to £1856 was paid,, leaving £3042. A further dividend of per cent, has been paid, making 7 per cent, for the year, £IOOO has been placed to reserve and the balance of £77 carried forward. Tho loans on mortgage total £114,097, having been increased by £2743 during tho year. The liabilities are:—Due to depositors, £50,999; creditors, £925: and duo to bank, £36. The reserve fund stands at £ISOO. The capital is divided into A shares £51,873, and < B shares £5726. CHEAPER POTATOES. An increased supply of new season's potatoes at I'ukckohe has resulted in lower prices. On Saturday the price quoted was £8 15s a ton on trucks for to-day's deliveries..
