GOOD TRIALS AT EPSOM, BENEFICE SHOWS SPEED. ' TORPEDO HUON'S PROGRESS* Conditions for training 1 at" Epsom wer» good on Saturday morning, when the majority of horses engaged at the Auckland meeting, which opens next Saturday, were given sound tasks. The track was fast and some good times were recorded. Benefice (K. Morrison) jumped off at the mile and a-half and after running the fij'st quarter in 365, was picked up by Torpedo Huon (J. McKendrick). Going very fast in the middle stage, Benefice was several lengths to the good passing the mile in 2.15, but 100 yds. from home she tired and Torpedo Huon, finishing determinedly, caught her on the post. Benefice ran the journey in 3.22, the last half in 1.7. Torpedo Huon's time for the mile and a-auarter was 2.46, the last half in 1.5 J. Gold Treasure (L. Laver) and Etta Cole (W. Willetts) were companions in a twomiles task, which promised to be a good effort on the part of the trotter until she left her feet in the last furlong. They were together at the mile post in 2.28 and Gold Treasure had the advantage passing the mile and a-half in 3.40 Etta Cole came fast from the quarter-mile, but broke. Gold Treasure finished his task in 4.45 2-5, tlie last half in 1.5 2-5. Etta Cole got to the end of the two mile 3 in 4.49 2-5. Oliver Thorpe (W. Willetts) and Harvest Boy (A. Carmichael) covered a mile and a-half in 3.33, both pacing steadily, Oliver Thorpe was in front at the mile in 2.25 and led into the straight, where Harvest Boy came smartly to get on terms at the finish. The last half was run in 1.8, but Harvest Boy appeared capable of going faster. Smart Time by Gumdigger. Mazda (M. Clifton) and Explosion (P. Morrison) ran a mile and a-naif at a 2.30 gait. In a second work-out they went faster, particularly over the last half-mile, which Explosion ran in 1.9, Mazda taking a fraction longer. In the first essay, going from a moving start, Mazda began well, but next time, tried from a stand, she did not go off smoothly. Dad's Hope (W. Cliiton) covered a mile, and a-quarter without any exertion in 2.54 and ran on for another half in 1.81, making 2.16} for the last mile. Gumdigger (G. Webb) registered smart time for a mile and a-half. He did not pace kindly over the first half, but warmed up to his work to run the next one in 1.6* and the succeeding one in 1.8, the full distance taking 3.26. , v , _ . , Woodvale OR. Warnock) and Kewpie a Triumph (J. Gee) left the mile and a-half post together, but the former was early in front and had a clear-cut advantage at the mile in 2.21 1-5. Kewpie'e Triumph made an effort in the final stages but could make no impression on Woodvale, who ran the last half in 1.5 4-5. Kewpie'e Triumph, who has lightened up since his race at Hamilton, took 3.29 for the journey. Ilolfe Audubon (T. Carlyon) and Eleawaft" (L. Laver) worked smoothly over & mile and a-half in 3.32, Rolfe Audubon running along easily at the finish to hold his companion safe. ' Gaza (J. Mahoney) began faster than Glandore (A. McGarry), who bobbled on the first turn, while working solidly over a mile. Gaza was well clear at the half-mile in 1.10 2-5 and, maintaining his advantage, registered 2.16 for the mile, the last half in 1.5 3-5. Glandore reached tßte post in 2.18. Jock Bingen's Sound Display. Margaret Wallace (E. G. Sandall) was always going better than Modern Light over two miles in 4.59. They were not out to make time, but increased *the pace over the final half, which Margaret Wallace rah in 1.12. Moko Girl (W. Dye) trotted steadily over three circuits and, hitting out resolutely over the final lap, showed a 2.25 gait, but wai tiring at the finish. Jock Bingen (F. J. Smith) gave a sound exhibition over two miles, which he covered in 4.45. He trotted the first mile in 2.25 and, hitting out; ovar the last half, came home full of running in I.B} Nell a. Dillon (C. G. Lee) worked lazily over two miles in a shade worse than 5 minutes. Tho last mile vras traversed in 2.21 and the final half-in 1.11. Nella Dillon looks in good heart again. Kingsclere (C. Smith) went away several lengths clear of Carl Mack (F. J. Smith) for a mile and a-half essay. Pacing soundly Kingsclere led past the mile in 2.30 and although Carl Mack made a forward move oyer the final quarter he failed to overhaul his stable-mate, who ran the journey in 3.41. Carl Mack trotted his last circuit soundly at a 2.23 gait. Stormy Mack (G. Webb) ran a mile and a-quarter creditably in 2.56, the first half in 1.10. He paced soundly and has benefited from his race at Hamilton. Concertina (F. Herring) and Sir Mfcko (T. Maxted) ran three circuits at a useful clip, but were not out for time. Concertina, who has done very little racing lately, ia looking well, and Sir Moko is making reasonable progress.
