TURF IN AUSTRALIA.

THE CAULFIELD MEETING. CUP WON BY DENIS BOY. A FINE FINISHING EFFORT. ' FIRST ACRE RUNS THIRD. (Received October 18, 5.5 p.m.) MELBOURNE. Oct. 18. There was showery weather for the second day of the Victoria Amateur Turf Club's Spring Meeting at Caulfield yesterday and in consequence the attendance suffered. Few New Zealanders were present. The Caulfield Cup was won by Denis Boy. who was in the rear division early, but moved up at tho turn and finished brilliantly to beat Prince Dayton by a long neck, with the New Zealander First Acre third. This was Denis Boy's first start in Melbourne and he entered into cup discussions a fortnight ago, following upon his victory in the Squatters' Handicap at Randwick. His trainee. Frank McGrath. of Sydney, won the race with Amounts last year. The favourito Vigne led into the straight, but tired in the last bit. Dark Man and Shadow King were never dangerous. A. Knox, rider of the winner, stated he was interfered with early in the race, but had a good run in the concluding stages and had the race won at the turn. T. Webster, rider of First Acre, said he had a good run on the rail 3 all the way, but hiß mount was not good enough, Denis Boy is not engaged in the Melbourne Cup. He is liable to rehandicap for the Cantala Stakes. Stephen, trained by the former New Zealander, L. Robertson, had an easy win in tho Burwood Handicap. Dutchie finished brilliantly to win the Mona Nursery. She cost only 00 guineas as a yearling and is owned by Mrs. L. R. Buxton, who raced High Syce, Highland and other good horses. Coonartha, owned and bred by Mr. Ben Chaffey. led all the way in the Gwyn Nursery. Mr. Chaffey won the Caulfield Cup with Whittier in 1925 and with Manfred in 1926, Coonartha is a son of Manfred. The veteran George William won the Wjuna Steeplechase easily. The favourite Tresolaus was fatally injured and his rider W. Sandiford. who fell with him, received contusions and possibly internal injuries. Baccha Sakao won the Windsor Handicap easily. His rider Frank Deinpsey also won on Stephen. Smith). Gold Jacket (L. McMahon) and Mountain Dell (L. Mitchell). They went away from the mile and a-quarter post in that order, Gold Jacket conceding tho leader 3s, while Mountain Dell reared up and lost a little ground. Tho speed was not on early, the first half taking 1.16, and as Tumatakuru passed the mile post in 2.19, the otheis had closed on him. The pace was now right on and a great set-to took place 111 the straight. Gold Jacket pulled to the outer, while Mountain Dell attempted to get through on the rails, but was momentarily chocked, in a hard finish Gold Jacket iust headed Great Ballin, with Mountain Dell and lumatakuru heads away. Gold Jacket and Mountain Dell ran 2 4(5 2-5 for the mile and a-quarter, the last half in 1.3; Great Ballin 2.48. last half in 1.35; and Tumatakuru 2.49 4-5, last half in 1.3 4-5. The four pacers did their work resolutely. Gold Jacket covered more ground than the others in the run home and his performance was reminiscent of his old form. Although he was not accepted for in the New Zealand Cup, due to nn oversight, he will take his place in the cuf) trial field at Wellington on October 31. He won this event two years ago.
