fancy-dress ball. The annual fancy dress ball for the patients of Tokanui Mental Hospital was held in the social hall of the institution on Thursday evening. Bright coloured streamers were a feature of the decorations and music was supplied by Dallon's orchestra. Dr. Prins, tho medical superintendant, Miss Semple, the matron, and Air. J. Howie, the chief warder, with their staff had worked hard to ensure success, a very enjoyable evening being the result. Over 60 couples were in fancy dress and the grand march was very spectacular. The great variety of costumes included: —Ladies: Blue courtier, Dolly Varden, peasant girl, tennis girl, Welsh girl, Aliss Valentine, Nell Gwynne, brown rabrit, Folly of tho Moon, old English lavender, French fishwife, masqueraders (lady and gentleman), flower seller, jolly girl, brown owl, Tudor maid, ribbon fan, Darby and Joan, Spanish lady, Early Victorian, pillar box, jester, Russian dancer, Amy Johnson, dominoes (ladv and gentleman), paint box, Queen of Diamonds, spring, summer, autumn and winter, Aliss America, Britannia, eighteenth century, the servant problem, Duchess of Devonshire, sugar stick, early nineteenth century, the British flag, milkmaid, rising sun, gipsies (3), Indian squaw, Dutch girl, jockey, baby, shamrock, busy bee, pierrettes (3), croquet, Argentine dancer, flames, lady of the harem, Belgium, buttercup, Grecian lady, country girl, apache, black gin, danger signals, witch, trump hand, Alsatian girl, carnival bells, hula girl, poppies, serving maid, buy British goods, advertisements, Spanish dancer, frothblower, green piorrette, golliwog, patchwork pierrette, Chinese lady.
