OPENING OF THE SEASON. CLUB CEREMONIES HELD. TRIBUTE TO LATE MR. HARDLEY. The official opening of tho 1931-32 bowling season was held in Auckland on Saturday, when 15 clubs held their ceremonies in fine weather. Gaily-decorated pavilions and fast and well-kept greens gave an attractive appearance to the various clubs' functions. Speakers at the various openings made feeling reference to tho loss bowling had Buffered thrcugh tin; deaths of Messrs. J. W. Hardley and J. M. Thomson, both of whom were prominently associated in an official capacity with bowling in Auckland. This was the one sad feature in an afternoon of great enjoyment, for the brilliant sunshine found the many greens wellpatronised, and there was an atmosphere of keenness among the players. AUCKLAND CLUB. The bowling season was opened on the Auckland Club's greens on Saturday under most promising conditions. All three greens have been rested and well-cared for throughout tho winter, and after the initial games on Saturday members were unanimous in declaring that they have never looked or felt better, There was a good attendance of eager bowlers. Mr. A. G. Grc.hnm, the president, welcomed members and their friends to the opening of the Auckland Club's 70th season, and pointed to the appearance of the greens as a welcome and promise of good bowling that could not be excelled. He referred feelingly to the recent deaths of Mr. J. W. Hardley, past president of the Dominion Bowling Association, and Mr. J. M. Thomson, president 'of the Auckland Centre, and paid a tribute to their work for bowling. Mr. Graham referred briefly to the history of the club as the pioneer ol bowling in New Zealand, and expressed great pleasure at the presence on the 70th opening day of Mr. James Carlaw, who has had an unbroken record of 40 years' membership. Mrs. Graham threw the first jack and played the first bowl, and the greens were declared open for the season. Campbell, Fraser, 23. EPSOM CLUB. The Epsom Bowling Club opened the summer season under ideal conditions on Saturday afternoon. _ There was a large attendance. Tho president, Mr. J. Wylie, extended a welcome to the ladies and visiting bowlers. Feeling reference was made to the loss sustained in the death of Mr. J. W. Hardley, of the Auckland Centre, and play was suspended for five minutes as a tribute to his personal qualities. Mr. J. B. Paterson made reference to Mr. Hardley's connection with the Nomads Club and regretted that such a valued member had passed E.way. Reference was also made to the loss by death of Mr. J. M. Thomson, late president of the Auckland Centre, and also of three members of the club, Messrs. Morton. Penn and A. G. Clark. Mr. Wylie welcomed twenty new members and stressed the fact that good members counted Jor more with the club than good players. The membership this season was higher than that of last season and 2G rinks weie available for play. Mrs. Wylie then threw the first jack and the greer was declared open for play. MANGE RE CLUB. There was_ a, large attendance at the official opening of the Mamrere Bowling Club on Saturday. Fine weather prevailed and tho greens were in excellent condition. The visitors included Mr. J. Pascoe. president of tho Auckland Centre: Mr. W. Massey, M.P., who was one of the players; and representatives from a number of city and suburban clubs. Mr. 13. House, president of the club, in welcoming the visitors, mentioned Mr. A. Robertson, whom he congratulated upon having secured the honour of runner-up in the Australian championship contest at Brisbane. He was glad to say that the club was starting the season with a good membership. Mr. House made feeling reference to the deaths of Messrs. J. M. Thomson and J. W. Hardley. He then called upon Mrs. A. Henwood, who welcomed visitors to tho croquet greens, after which Mrs. E. Hodges drove tho first ball of the season. Mr. J. Pascoe extended to the bowlers the congratulations of the centre upon the excelle.it greens they had secured, and expressed the hope that the coming season would be enjoyable for all concerned. STANLEY CLUB. There was a large attendance nt the Stanley Bay green on Saturday afternoon, when the official opening of the season was held. Mr. F. J. Hooker, the club president, welcomed the visitors, among whom was Mr. A. Harris, M.P.. He congratulated Mr. .T. W. Whyte upon being elected to the Auckland Centre, and thanked Mrs. PL Cusworth and family for their gift, of a new flag to fly over the pavilion. Feeling reference was mndo to the lo?s bowling had suffered by the death of Messrs. J. W. Ilardley and J. M. Thomson, t.vo prominent members of the centre, and also to the loss the club had suffered bv tin- death of Mrs. R. Ross and Mr. W. Mitcholl. Mr. White extended congratulations on behalf of the Auckland Centre, and wished the club a prosperous season. After the Mayor of Devonport, Mr. H. F. W. OTAHUHU CLUB. Fine weather favoured the official opening of the 25th Beason of the Otahuhu Bowline Club on Saturday when, in recognition of tho "silver" anniversary of the club's career, a festival atmosphere was introduced by the executive. Pride of place was given in the refreshment lounge to a large birthday cake bearing the requisite number of candles, and the first jack and bowl thrown were silverised with the club colours, green rtnd gold, painted on tho discs. Bagpipe selections were played during tho afternoon by Mr. R. A. Archibald. The president. Mr. J. Sinclair, welcomed the visitors and members and mentioned that, three of the foundation members were still actively associated with tho club. Tho Auckland Centre was represented by Messrs. R. Parker Hill and S. J. Harbutt, who expressed their wishes for a successful season. Feeling reference was made by Mr. Parker-Hill to tho death of Mr. J. M. Thomson and Mr J. W. linrdley. As a mark of respect play was stopped at 3 o'clock and the players vacated the green and stood in silence while Mr. Archibald played the lament on the pipes. It was a touching scene in tribute to tho memory of two bowlers who hud done much for the game. The first jack was thrown by Mrs. J. Sinclair and Mr. J. Atkinson, aged 87. former Mayor of Otahuhu, and an old member of the club, rolled the first bowl. Congratulations were extended to Mr. Atkinson, whose birthday coincided with tho club's celebrations. [from our own correspondent.] HAMILTON, Saturday. The first competition for the Matthews' Ferns this season was played on the Claudelands Bowling Club's green to-day, when the holders H. Taylor, W. Kirk, A. J. Prescott and J. O. Finish, defeated the challengers. A. Blackwood. C. 11. Houlden, H. L. White, and B. Bagley, by '24 points to 10. On one head Fruish secured seven points. DECEASED BOWLERS. PLAY TEMPORARILY SUSPENDED. Play was suspended at the Carlton green for five minutes on Saturday afternoon, when tho president of the club. Mr. T. B. Rowe, spoke feelingly of tho death of Mr. J. W. Hardley, and the great loss he would be to tho bowling world. Mr. W. E. Arey, who was secretary of the New Zealand bowling team which poured Great Britain, Canada and the United States in 1928, and who had been associated with Mr. Hardlev for the 11 months of the tour, said Mr. Ilardley was iv loyalist, and Imperialist. His speeches at bowling banquets throughout the Empire were full of tho patriotism of New Zealand, and were always received with unbounded enthusiasm. Mr. Hardley was undoubtedly one r of the greatest bowling personalities New Zealand had produced. The play ceased for five minutes at the St Heliers Bowling Club green on Saturday afternoon, the bell tolled, the flag was lov.'ered to half mast and Messrs. P. White and G. F. Campbell spoke of tho great losses the game had Sustained by the deaths of Messrs. J. W. Hardley. J. M. Thomson and O. Gallaher.
