UNUSUAL END TO MATCH.
SPECTATORS RUSH FIELD. BALL NOT " DEAD " AT BELL. An exciting and very unusual ending to the Rugby League football match between Eastern Suburbs and DevonportMarist combined teams was witnessed at Carlaw Park on Saturday. The visitors were one point behind the home team and there was great excitement right on time when Pope and Pearce made a splendid effort to win the game. The bell sounded for time and thousands of spectators jumped the fences and rushed the ground. Several players of each team had left the playing area and the situation became tense when Mr. P. Rogers, the referee, ordered the game to continue. The ball was not "dead" according to the rules. Play was held up while officials vainly tried to clear the ground. Some minutes later, from the scrum, the ball was sent to Campbell, the combined team's fullback, who kicked out of bounds on the full. This necessitated another scrum. The visitors' brilliant centre, D. Brown, made a great effort to score, but just failed to hold Noyman's pass. The ball then became "dead" and the whistle sounded for time five minutes after the bell had rung. The referee's rulings were in order.
