NOTES ON THE PLAY.

SOME REMARKABLE SCORES. KEEN AMATEUR CONTESTS. BY J. L. BLACK. CHRISTCHURCII. Saturday. In the amateur foursomes Jack and Harold Black put up a fine score of 72 in the morning round. They were paired against Ray Blank, the Shirley Club champion, and 11. F. Tosswill, Harewood Club champion, and both pairs played great golf in the morning. The local players, with the aid of their local knowledge, held the upper hand until the last three holes, where the Black brothers caught up two strokes, which put them in the lead by one stroke. The Blacks reached the turn in 35, included in which was a 2 at the ninth, where Harold Black sank a 20-foot putt. At the 10th, 400 yds., after a good drive by his brother, Jack Black put a full mashio three inches from the cup for an " eagle " 3. They completed the round in 72.

In tho meantime, Blank and Tosswill were playing great golf, reaching the turn in 36. Hiey reeled off the first four holes on the inward journey in 4, 4, 4, 2, and had then drawn level with the Blacks. A par 3 at the 15th put them one stroke ahead, but, finishing poorly in 6, 5, 4, they had to be content with second place, ono stroke behind.

The only other pair to come within range in the morning were J. A. Millard and F. C. Ward, local players, who finished in 75.

In the afternoon a large gallery followed the leading pairs in both amateur and professional matches. Blank and Tosswill drew level with the Black brothers at the first hole in 4 to 5 and by brilliant golf reached the turn in 36, two under par. The Black brothers were out in 39, facing a deficit of two strokes on the day. At the first hole on the inward journey the Black brothers got a stroke back and brought the scores even at tho 12th. At the 15th Tosswill found the rough to the left of the green and the Black brothers recorded another par 3 to take the lead. Facing the last hole they had a lead of one stroke. They took the hole and tho title, Blank ant! Tosswill having to be content with second place. The winners' card in the morning read: — Out: 44355444 2—35 In': 34445454 4—37 Millard and Ward returned a good card of 75 in the morning and were still in the running after playing the 13th hole in the afternoon, but lost their opportunity at tho next three holes. Bott and Macfarlane started very badly in the morning and their chances were ruined in the first few holes. They completed the round in 80 and added a good card of 75 to this in the afternoon, which put thorn in fourth position. Duncan and Ross, last year's winners, played very patchy golf and shared equal honours in next position with the colts, Hornabrook and Silk, with a mediocre total of 156. The professional foursomes again saw A. J. Shaw installed as a winner. This year ho had J. Watt, tho Heretaunga professional, to partner him. Shaw's great length, coupled with Watt's steady play, enabled them to return the great score of 71 in tho morning round.
