NEW YORK GAOLS.
PRISONERS' RECREATIONS. AUSTRALIAN SURPRISED. NEW YORK. Sept. 18. Unemployed roaming through the streets are worse off than prisoners in the gaols of New York City and State, says Colonel L. M. Mullan, governor of Hobart Gaol, after an inspection tour. He is astounded j because Sing Sing prisoners have baseball games, radios, dramatic performances and I other entertainment fount!, j Colonel Mullan says America puts too j many prisoners in one gaol. Australia I would not permit men awaiting triai to j be incarcerated as long as they are here. The Tombs prison is crowded for months and occasionally for more than a year with such cases. He believes that the rigorous Australian system is better designed to regenerate the criminal.
