FIFTY YEARS AGO.
EXTRACTS FROM THE HERALD. _____ The following are extracts from 'the New Zealand Herald of September 29, 1881: It is reported that Sir George Grey will be a candidate for Sydenham, Christchurch, at the general elections. It the largest constituency in the colony, having a population of 8460. We saw by the result of the late interference by Russia in the affairs of Afghanistan how easily this frontier of India may be the cause of a struggle between Britain and her Asiatic rival. It is a fortunate circumstance, so far, that Abdurahman Khan inflicted such a defeat on Ayoub Khan as to compel him to retreat to Herat. There is only one point about the trouble on which there is common agreement— ; that Russia must not acquire any portion of Afghanistan. Mr. Gladstone and his colleagues appear prepared to tolerate anything short of that. Their policy is clearly defined, if ig llo * minious.
