A series 0? surprises for which the soft rffate of tho'track after heavy rain in the jnorning was. in a measure, responsible, ■'marked the opening of the Avondale Jockey Club's Spring Meetinc on Satur4jv. Not one favourite was successful and there were three double-fitrure dividends, by far the largest being that re•'"'turned by the cup winner, Little Doubt, w ho was the rank outsider of the field of giiteen. The apprentice jockey, H. E. Stcckley, attached to J. Fryer's stable at Hawera, yns remarkably successful, having only three mounts and winning on each one. The unfavourable weather conditions in the morning seriously affected the attendance, and the totalisator investments showed a marked fall. • Hie machine handled £18,512 10s, compared with £37,661 on the first day lnsfc year, ;i decrease of £ 1 0 .14S 10s, or over 50 per cent. DEFEAT OF CEOUPIEE. MANAWHENUA'S GOOD WIN. A STRONG FINISHING RUN. GOLDEN WINGS UNPLACED. BY ARCHER, i ihe fact that Croupier had been feeling tne effects 0.1 a cold did not deter investors from sending him out favourite for the Flying Stakes Handicap, but the three-year-old s sequence of victories was interrupted when he had to lower his colours to Manawhenua, who won brilliantly in the hands of H. Gray. Manawhenua was not despised in the betting and he was a good fourth fancy but at a fairly good price. Manawhenua was quickly prominent from Golden Wings. King Colossus, Croupier, King Ford and Silvermine. Golden Wings then ran to the front to lead across the top from Manawhenua, Croupier, King Ford, Silvermine, Refresher, King Colossus and Paganelli. Between the half mile and three furlongs post Honiton made a fast run and at the turn she was right up to Golden Wings. Golden Wing 3 and Honiton was just clear of Refresh?:; and Manawhenua when they straightened up for the run home, while King Ford, Croupier and Paganelli were also handy. Just below the distance Manawhenua shot through and he gave nothing a chance, eventually winning very comfortably by two and a-half lengths from Croupier, who defeated Refresher by a neck. Supremacy, wide out, was fourth, succeeded by King Co'lossus, Hunting Day, Silvermine, Lady Ques, Honiton and Gold Money. Manawhenua fairly re-veiled in the soft going, which may have hindered some of his opponents, who failed to display the dash expected. His performance was a good one and he promises-- to be better than ever this season. Croupier was beaten but not disgraced and when he is rid of his cold he will do even better. Refresher ran his usual honest race, being always in the picture, but Supremacy was unsighted until rfear the end, when he came with a. fine run on the inside. King Colossus ran quite a good race but Golden Wings stopped very quickly in the straight. Honiton displayed plenty of speed in the middle stages but could not go on at the end. High Comedy wa3 one of the last to finish and displayed no dash at all. He was not at home in the going and will be seen to more advantage when the ground is firm. Paganelli showed sufficient dash to indicate that he is far from being a spent light,' bnt Lady Ques and Silvermine were never well up until the finish, where they were much closer than in the early stages. SURPRISE IN HACK PLATE. CURIE BEATS BIDDY'S BOY. There was a surprise in the Champion Hack Plate when Curie, at double-figure odds, downed the favourite, Biddy's Boy, in rather sensational fashion with a fast finishing dash over the last fifty yards, when Biddy's Boy stopped very quickly. Biddy' 3 Boy and Valueless were first I away from a good start. Biddy's Boy and Gay Lap leading along the back across i the top from Aspian. Catoma. Valueless, Full Measure, Bronze Tray and Jalldy Karo. Biddy's Boy -ame into the straight just ! ahead of Gay Lap, with Aspian and Catoma j a couple of lengths back, and then Full i Measure. Valueless and Gibraltar. Biddy's Boy looked to have the race won at_ the ! distance. wh,;re Curie had. run through to | second position on the rails, but he tired 1 at the cncl and Curie beat him by halt-a-length. Gibraltar, finishing on solidly, was two lengths away third and Speedmint was fourth. Next to . ross the lirie were Catoma. Gav Lap, Jalldy Karo and Valueless. Curie was right at the tail of the field on the rails at the turn and his finishing run was full of merit. Biddy's Boy displayed plenty of brilliancy, but. stopped to nothing just near the post. Gibraltar put in a lons-sustain ?d run and his performance was quite a good ore. Speedmint was battling on at the end, but Catoma ar.d Aspian bolh failed to run on. Aspian being beaten well below the distance. WHAKAMA'S HURDLES WIN. UNOCO AND RUSSET MOOR FALL. Whakama, from the same stable as Wiltshire, wan successful at a, good price in the Kinesland Hurdles, for which Patutahi and Unoco were the favourites. The wanner has only recently commenced racing over fences and she won in a fashion tnat ausrurs well for her future prospects. Whakama and Neil led over the first fence and Whaknma was joined by Kus;ei Moor near the mile post, whereUnoco went up third and was clear of Careen and Slum-). The field was well strung out along the back and across the lop, and Whakama just led Russet Moor into the straight, with Unoco several lengths bacn third and a big gap to Neil. Cargen and Monetize. Russet Moor and Unoco tell at the second to last fence, bringing down Patutahi, and it was then left to \\hakama to win easily by five lengths from Monetize. Neil was about a length away third and Nassock was a poor fourth. Cargen ar.d St. AmeS were nest. Unoco and Russet Moor both appeared to have chances when they fell and L noco might have won if he had stood up. A3 he was just making a run and still looked to be going well. Patutahi cut up badly after hitting the first fence and he was a long way back when brougnt aown. jNCU shared very creditably for a beginner and should be very useful when he has a little more experience. OUTSIDER WINS MILE HACK. SUCCESS OF PROTOMINT. Investors were again astray, in the Swan, son Handicap when Protommt, at doublefigure odds, scored very easily from Lady Vaife, the second fancy, and Lord Val, no Wild Country were quickest .o begin and they were the lenders along the back from Tambourine, Tarcna and The Tirk Jumper Tambourine ran to the front lIIr the five-furlongs post and carried on the running across the top from Wild Country Tarcha. The Jack Jumper, Lady Vane. Catch 'Em and Protommt. Tambourine was first into the straight from Lord Val, Tarcha. Catch 'Em. Protommt and Lady Vane. Protommt came tnrough at the distance ar.d won easing up by two ..j o Jin If lengths from Lady \ ane, who rut Lord Val out of second by half a length. Dominican was fourth, followed by Catch "Em. Running Over. Kairuri, Landmark and C Vhe m go?ng was right to the liking of Protomint, who had the advantage of a olb allowance, and he gave nothing a chance a. the finish. Lady Vane and Lord \al both ra r> "ood races, and Dominican also shaped well." Catch 'Em was a shade unlucky and may do better shortly. COLTS CHANGE OF NAME. TEAZAN ALTERED TO TANKARD. The two-year-old colt by Tea Tray from Zany, who was formerly known as leazan, which tame has been disallowed by the Racing Conference, has now been registered as Tankard. The youngster is 10 have his fir=t race in the Nursery Handicap at Avondale to-day and it will be interesting to see how he performs, as a reputation for speed and was recently purchased at a good figure by Mr. C.
