"Mr. and Mrs. John Rennie, of Christchurch. who have been spending some .days in Auckland., after their return from ,» prolonged visit to Australia, will visit their son at Wanganui College and their daughter in Wellington before returning ■to Christchurch, at the end of this week.

Mrs. R, H. Bettington, formerly Miss "Marion Lowry, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. T. H. Lowrv, of Okawa, headed the qualifying rounds in the Australian ladies'* golf champonship this year. A lapse of form brought about her elimination in the first round of match play, however.

Women golfers from all parts of New Zealand will visit Rotorua early in October for the Dominion golf championships. Heretaunga players who will take part are Mrs. J. C. Peacock, Mrs. D. 0. Menzies, Mrs. Duncan Stout, Miss Lulu Dyer, Miss Enid Bell. Mrs. Stronach Paterson, Miss Mardie Ward, Miss Muriel Wylie, Mrs. Guv Fulton and Mrs. Vincent Ward.

. Miss L. McKenzie Fraser (Auckland) •and her sister have spent the last eighteen months travelling leisurely in England, writes our London correspondent on August 21. They were at Boscombe for six months. Warwickshire has recently been another county that provided them with plenty of interest. Now they are once more in London, within a short distance of Kensington Gardens.

The Mothers' Club of the Y.W.C.A. met, recently and held a most successful social evening. St. Thomas' Orchestra, undei Mr. Ewart, supplied the dance music, many old-time dances being enjoyed. An interesting and enjoyable feature of the evening's programme was the folk dancing led by Miss Phyllis Phillips. Musical items were contributed by the following: Recitation, Miss Brown; song, Mrs. Cole; duet, Mesdames Black and Massicks, and song, Mr. Collier.

A well-attended meeting of the Epsom Christian Temperance Union was held on Thursday afternoon in the Methodist Hall. Mrs. Neal presided in the absence of Mrs. Benfell. A full and interesting report of the recent district, convention was read by Miss Katterfeldt. : The various 'emits pass'd at convention were also considered. Ihe secretary rend ■a resume of the various improvements in the social life of women gained since the granting of the franchise in 189.3.

A very pleasant afternoon in aid of St. John Apibulanco funds was held for the Birkdale Women's Institute bv Mrs. Reich, at her residence, Victoria Road East, Birkdale. on Friday. Pianoforte solos by Mrs. Williams, songs by Mrs. Lee and Mrs. Reich and recitations by Mrs. Hughes were milch enjoyed. Prizes were won for competitions by Mrs. Hughes, Mrs. Bentley and Mrs Jewell. Afternoon tea was provided by Mrs. Reich, who was .cordially thanked for her entertainment, those- present were Mesdnmes Bartlett, Gilpin (2), Lee, Thomas, Hew•son, Hughes, Squires, C'hetwynd, Taylor, Bentley, Williams and Jewell.

Tributes to the valuable hospital and social service work of Mrs. P. Fraser, -■wife of Mr. P. Fraser, M.P.. were paid by : members of the Wellington Hospital Board when the chairman. Mr. F. Castle, stated .at a' meeting of the board that, acting ,on medical advice, Mrs. Fraser had asked for six months' leave on account of illhealth. Mr. Castle said that her work in connection with the social welfare department had been outstanding and Mr. G. Pethcrick, chairman of the Social Service Committee, said that she had done splendid work, not only in connection with the social welfare committee, but in the interests of the citizens generally.

Two enterprising young Londoners who have planned a long tour in the East, in Australia and New Zealand, are Miss Molly Neilson and Miss J. Connell. They will leave in October by the Ulysses, and go first to Malay. Hongkong and Japan, states our London correspondent. Miss Neilson was educated at Oxford. Miss Connell was for three years at King's College, London University, taking a roursa in household and social science. They are both very keen to see New Zealand. They intend to explore the "finest walk in the world," and they hope to do a little mountaineering as well. They expect to reach New Zealand in the coming summer.

A bridge drive was held at the residence of Mrs. F. G. Radcliffe, Mill Road, Whangarei. in aid of the funds of the "Whangarei branch of tho Plunket (Society. A very successful and enjoyable evening ■was spent, and the sum of over five pounds was raised. Prizes for the highest score were wor. by Mrs. W. Sword and Mr. Gerald Hill, and the hidden number l>v Mr. R. C. Harington. Among those present were Mesdames Radcliffe, McEnnis (president of the society), Mrs. Christiansen (secretary), Thorne. Harington, Crawford, Steadman, Donaldson, HarringtonWalker, Morrish, Byrne, Gurr, Reid, Hill, J. Holmes. Slifro, Hunt. .T. E. Holmes. Beere, Foote. Ward, Sword, J. Woolley, MacKie, Bisseti, Wood, Pickmere, Lindesay, Misses Radcliffe, Thomas, Tonkin, McLean, Crombie. It. is the intention of the committee to hold several more drives within the next two months.
