VICTORY FOR WELLINGTON
HAWKE'S BAY TEAM DEFEATED
[BY TKLEUllAl'lt. —I'IIESS ASSOCIATION.] NAPIER, Saturday. A crowd of about 4000 saw Wellington heat Hawke's Bay by 15 points to 8 in the final Rugby match for the district this eeaeon. The weather was fine and the ground in goo<r condition, but a high breeze was blowing, and Hawke's Hay played against it. in the first spell. The visitors opened an offensive early and the backs scored a spectacular try. The ball travelled from Lilburne, to Page, to McDonald an'tl back to Lilburne, who carried a Hawke's Bay uiu>i four yards on his back to score. Nicholls failed with the kick. Ten minutes later, after Wellington had keen on the attack almost constantly, Ward crossed near / the posts. Nicholls failed again. ilcLeun improved the Visitors' score a few minutes afterwards- Nicholls again missed. There was no further score in the first spell, which ended:—Wellington, 9; Hawke's Bay, 0. The wind assisted Ilawke's Bay in the •i'cond Bpell and it looked dangerous for the first time. Cooke opened the scoring with a 'brilliant try, which revealed his beet form. £srenside's kick missed. Wellington crossed its opponent's line a few minutes later, Barry scoring. Nicholls' kick was spoiled by the wind. Hawke's Bay retaliated with a fine try by Fitziribbon, which Setford converted. The visitors' total waa increased by a try by Bydder from a forward melee. Kilby'e kick hit the crossbar and the game ended:— Wellington, 15: Hawke's Bay, 8.
