THE ANGLING SEASON.

OPENING ON THURSDAY. BRISK BUSINESS IN TACKLE. FAVOURABLE EXPECTATIONS. The prospects for the fishing season, which will open in the Auckland acclimatisation district on Thursday, are regarded as favourable. The greatest interest among anglers will, however, be apparent when the season at Taupo and Rotorna begins on, November 1. From opinions expressed on Saturday by dealers in sporting goods it seems evident that economic difficulties have in no way curbed the enthusiasm of anglers. The manager of one large firm reported that the business done in the past few weeks in fishing material had exceeded that prior to the opening of the season last vear. \

" The position is somewhat remarkable in view of the general trade depression, he said, " and the business wo have done is much better than had been anticipated. It is a material indication of the increasing interest in fishing as a sport." The inquiries for fishing goods have come from all parts of New Zealand and the custom with anglers in the South Island and Wellington Province, where successful seasons are to be expected according to reports on the condition of streams and lakes, has grown to a considerable extent. In the South, fishing in the early part of the season is ordinarily accepted as being better than in the Auckland district and the tradition concerning the excellence of southern sport seems likely to be maintained this year. Reports concerning the condition of streams in the Auckland district have not been very definite so fur, but some anglers expect better results this season from tbe heavy stocking of trout fry throughout the district. This impression applies particularly to the King Couutry, which is regarded as a distinctly promising field. Interest in the use of the light, dry fiy which has enjoyed wide popularity in the South for many seasons has been a feature of the sale of tackle in Auckland this season and it is expected that the dry, floating fiy will be seen here much more than has been the case in the past. Considering the volume of business done in tackle in the city at a comparatively early time, steady trade is anticipated during the mouth remaining until the opening of the season at Taupo and Kotorua. These two great centres of angling will probably attract more sportsmen than ever.

The Aucklaud season will close at tho end of April and that for Rotorua aud Taupo a month later.
