SEQUEL TO COURT CASE.
MIDDLE-AGED MAN FINED,
•" It would be a nice state of affairs if Jlre allowed' witnesses in our Courts to be assaulted," said Mr. F. Iv. Hunt, S.M., in the Police Court yesterday, when Ernest Edward Hunter, a middle-aged man (Mr. McCarthy), pleaded guilty to a charge of. assaulting Duncan Gordon Milne, a witness in a recent legal action. ' Detective-Sergeant Kelly said the offence ■was committed in the Magistrate's Court buildings on July 31, on which day accused was sued by his wife for maintenance. Accused, who lost the case, was Been to strike complainant, one of the witnesses, on the head. In asking for leniency, counsel said the assault was the outcome of domestic trouble and was committed in the heat of the moment. Accused very much regretted his Accused was fined £1 and costs, £1 10s, in default seven days' imprisonment. A week was allowed in which to make payment.
