ONAKAKA IRON WORKS.
EXTENT OF OPERATIONS. PLANT BUSY UNTIL DECEMBER. [BT TELEGRAPH. —PR.ESS ASSOCIATION'.] NT.LSON". Friday. "Although we are again working at full capacity, the duration of the period for which Onakaka Iron Works will remain in operation depends solely upon two factors, the state of the depression in December and the action the new Government will take regarding the importation of Australia's iron, made possible by the adverse
exchange." This statement was made by the works manager, Mr. .J. A. Heskett, who recalled that when Onakaka shipped some 2000 tons of pig iron to Australia the Federal Government immediately put on sufficient duty to prohibit further export. So quickly did the Commonwealth authorities act that only a portion of a cargo had been discharged at Melbourne when the customs officials placed an embargo on further unloading until an additional charge of £1 a ton had been paid. Over 100 men at present engaged have work in hand until December, but the Government's assistance indicated was essential.
