THE AUCKLAND EXCHANGE. FIRMER TONE DEVELOPS. A distinctly firmer tone developed on the Auckland Stock Exchange yesterday and a fairly wide range of investments changed hands at increased prices. Buyers operated more freely in Government loans and there was less evidence of selling pressure. Improved rates were realised for 1937 5£ per cent, bonds, which sold at £95 ss, an advance of ss. Levels for 1937 5j per cent. Inscribed stock also firmed after a late sale on Wednesday at the unchanged price of £95, more being unobtainable at £95 ss. confidence was displayed in the banks group, firmer prices being registered in the business recorded. Commercials of Australia made unchanged rates ( in a deal at 12s lOd, and closed appreciably firmer than the previous day's levels. Nationals of New Zealand brought 6d more at £3 10s and "New South Wales were done 5s better at £25 2s 6d. A rise of 6(1 to 42s was registered by New Zealands, one sale failing to satisfy require merits. Improved support was forthcom ing in insurance for how Zealands which changed hands 6d dearer at 37s 6d. South British were firmly supported at 50s without response from holders. The market continued to strengthen for Goldsbrough-Morts, an adyance of Is in offers failing to attract a seller. Some interest was also shown in shipping and timbers. For New Zealand Breweries an increase of 3d in offers to 28s 9d attracted a selling quotation of 30s. Inquiry in miscellaneous covered a wider range. Support for British Tobaccos strengthened 9d to 21s 6d, and a seller came into the market at 245. Australian Glass were sought at 225. but no supplies were available. For Wilsons Cements 35s bd was paid, a rise of Is. More were inquired for at the same price. The only loss of the day took place in mining in King Solomons, which were sold 6d lower at 2s 3d. A firm market existed for Waihis which, after sale twice 2d dearer at 15s lid, were placed on offer again at 16s 3d. A shilling more was forthcoming for Mount Lyells, which were sought at 16s and held for 17s 6d.
