FAILURE OF BANKS.
AMERICAN INSTITUTIONS. SMALL LOCAL CONCERNS. (Received September 22. 8.45 p.m.) NEW YORK. Sept. 21. A message from Eau Claire. Wisconsin, says the Eau Claire State Bank, with resources of £BOO.OOO, and the Union Savings Bank, a smaller institution, were closed to-day. The sale of the State Bank's assets to the North-west Bank Corporation of Minneapolis was stopped by news of the British gold standard move. A message from Wilkesbarre, Pennsylvania, says the Liberty Bank and Trust Company, with a capital of £65.000, was closed to-day. At Pittsburgh three local banks were closed to-day. " to conserve their assets and protect the depositors." SAFE DEPOSIT ROBBED. BURGLARS SECURE £20,000. USE OF CARD INDEX. (Received September 22, S.lio p.m.) NEW YORK. Sept. 22. Cracksmen looted the vaults of the Wicker Park Safe Deposit Company at Chicago and secured £20.000. They were so expert that they did not touch the burglar alarms. The burglars found a card index which admitted them to 150 private boxes of customers. The money had been placed there owing to tho failure of a number of small banks.
