SURPRISE FOR SCHOOL.
BILL FOR £3OO RECEIVED. TARRING WORK IN GROUNDS. After having ' tarring operations carried out in its grounds, for which it had £75 in hand, the Kowhai Junior High Schol was presented with a bill for £3OO. At a meeting of the Mount Albert Borough Council last evening, the resident engineer, Mr. W. E. Begbie, was asked to report on the matter. "I was informed by the foreman that the work had been put in hand at the request of Mr. A. A. Buckley, then a councillor," said Mr. Begbie. "On several occasions previously similar work had been carried out, and this was never brought before the council. The work was really in the hands of the foreman, and I was never informed about the cost limit." Mr. J. H. Langley said he remembered the matter coming before the council. "We have received a report from the engineer, and if you feel that is not sufficient an amendment should be moved calling for a further investigation," said the Mayor, Mr. W. F. StilwelL He added that Mr. Buckley had stated that when asked about the account the foreman had expressed surprise that the work he had carried out should have cost £3OO. He thought it would have been covered by £BO, but on the engineer going over the figures the sum of £3OO had been adhered to as a correct estimate. It was decided to make an investigation into the matter.
