EXTRACTS FROM THE HERALD. The following are extracts from the New Zealand Herald of September 23. 1881: Messages of condolence, including one from Queen Victoria, have been sent from all parts of tho world to the widow of President Garfield. Owing to apprehensions that an attempt may be made to lynch the president's assassin, Guiteau, his guards at the gaol in Washington. ha v e been doubled. The final business sitting of the House of Representatives for 'this session ended last night most ingloriouslv. but perhaps somewhat appropriately, considering fbi* general tenor of the session, in a " countout," Mr. Reeves having attempted i" vain to get a hearing for iiis views upon the Civil Service. There was abundant evidence that members were tired of legislating, or of political squabbling, for not a few had left several days ago. Ihe last question put to Mr. Hall was as to the time the general elections would be held. The Premier replied that they would be got through " ns early as possible" and "not later than absolutely necessary." There is not much information to be obtained from these phrases.
