TRAMWAYS MATTERS.

NO PASSES FOR THE BLIND. STOPPING PLACES CONSIDERED. The Auckland Transport Board decided at its meeting yesterday that, owing to the financial position, it was unable at present to accede to the request of the Jubilee Institute for the Blind that free passes on the tramcars should be granted to blind workers going to and from their work. The institute is to be advised that consideration will be given to the request at a later date. A recommendation of its traffic inspector adopted by the Mount Albert Borough Council to the effect that tram stops should be at least two tram lengths clear of ai.y intersection was placed before the board for consideration. It was referred to the committee of the whole board, the general manager to report. Reporting on a suggestion that an additional stopping place should be provided at Surrey Crescent on the outward journey before reaching the intersection of the Point Chevalier route, the manager, Mr. A. E. Ford, said that owing to the desire for speeding up of the services endeavour was made, as far as was consistent with public convenience, to eliminate any unnecessary stops. As ample shelter was provided at the present stopping place, it was felt that this was the most appropriate place for tramcars to stop. Having regard to- all the circumstances, he could not recommend an additional stopping place. The report was referred to the committee of the whole board. A letter was received from the City Council suggesting a conference between representatives of the council, the board and officers of the Railway Department to consider a proposal that a portion of the old railway station site should be used as a bus terminus. The board resolved to be represented at the conference. It. was decided to make no alteration to tlie Victoria Avenue stopping places.
