APPEAL TO COUNTRY.

EARLY ELECTION LIKELY. DISCUSSION IN BRITAIN. ANTI-LABOUR COMBINE. By Telegraph—Preps Association—Copyright. (Received September 17, 9.3 p.m.) Times Cable. LONDON, Sept. 17. The political correspondent of the Times says an announcement bv the Cabinet regarding the general election may be expected without delay. Both the sup porters of the Government and the Opposition regard an early appeal tn the country as inevitable. Although no decision has been reached, it is clear that pourparlers aro being carried out on the lines of the suggestion first thrown out in the Times for an appeal to the country as a National Government. r l he Daily Telegraph's Parliamentary correspondent says the Government is considering such an appeal, but emphasises that it would be on the full Conservative tariff policy for industry and agriculture. He says Ministers realise that the unity shown in tho first task, that of balancing the Budget, should be extended to tho greater task of correcting the adverse trado balance, but they recognise also they must have a mandate for the necessary measures. An arrangement which the constituencies are now considering is the withdrawal of Conservative opposition to sitting Liberals who subscribe to the Government's programme, in order to avoid three-cornered contests against Labour candidatesLord Stonehaven, speaking at Liverpool, said no one could tell when the election would come. There was no reason why, if Labour were, to bo returned to power, tho same thing that had happened in New South Wales should not happen in Britain, only ten times worso. The Morning Post appeals to the Liberals to accept tho fact that tariffs are ultimately inevitable either by tho Conservatives or the Labour Party and to join tho Conservatives in the, major task of keeping out Labour, whose return would destroy British credit. Tho Financial News says tho strongest resistance should bo offered to tho attempt to stampede tho country by high protectionists. The paper argues that a temporary prohibition of some imports, even e.xport bounties, would be preferable to import barriers.
