WOMEN'S INSTITUTES.
Coromandel. —Nearly 70 visitors attended the open evening which was held in the Oddfellows* Hall. Mrs. IT. Chambers presided. The play, " Double Demon," was presented, and others contributing to the. programme were:—The Misses A. and S. Woodliouse, IMiss G. Jones. Miss C. McNeil, Miss T.- Darling, Miss M. Gamble, Miss E. Gibbs, Mrs. A. Woodliouse. The hostesses wero Mrs. H. Denize, Mrs. M. Ooffeo and Mrs. Aicken. Edgecumbe.—Mrs. W. G. Gow, vicepresident, presided at the monthly meeting. Remits for the bi-annual federation meeting were discussed and voted upon. Mrs. Hallett, of Otakiri Institute, gave a demonstration of leather work and exhibited many interesting specimens of her work. The demonstrator gave two dainty leather articles as prizes for a musical parcel game. The competition, " A Vase of Spring Flowers," was won by Miss Gunn, Mrs. Terry and Mrs. Will. The hostesses were Mrs. W. G. Gow, Mrs. French and Mrs. Baker. Glen Eden.—A demonstration of flag bridge was given by Mrs. Fox, who also kindly donated the prizes, were won by Mesdames Hawkey, McNaught and Mclvor. A knitting competition resulted in Mrs. Waldron winning the first, prize, for a pair of knitted slippers, and Mrs. Watts, the second for a knitted teacosy. The hostesses were the Misses Thompson and Brassington. Taneatua.—Mrs. Semmens presided over a large attendance at the monthly meeting, held on September 8. Mr. Gooch gavQ a lecture on " Roso Culture." The presentation of a silver mug was made to the first institute baby, Master Lyons. A nursery rhyme competition was won by Mrs. Varlcy, and a recitation by Miss San ton was much appreciated. Visitors were present from the Whakatano and Wa iota hi Institutes. The hostesses were Mrs. Collins, Miss Hills and Miss Reid. Waiotahi.—Delegates wero appointed for tlio federation meeting, to he held at Matata on September 20. An amusing play was performed by Mrs. Toone, and Mrs. arid Miss Debrecenv. An exhibition of sewing was remarkably good, a special exhibit being a beautiful quilt ma do with lamb's wool by Mrs, O'Reilly. The roll call, " Rowing Hints," was responsible for many nsotul idea*.
