STEWART ISLAND CABLE.
REPAIR WORK REFUSED. CONCERN IN INVERCARGILL. [BY TELEGRAPH. —PRESS ASSOCIATION.] INVERCARGILL, Thursday. Disappointment that the PostmasterGeneral had not agreed to restore the cable telephonic service between Stewart Island and the mainland was expressed at a meeting of the executive of the Southland League this evening, and it was decided to make further strong representations to have the cable repaired. The Minister advised that in view of the financial position he regretted that the restoration of telephonic communication could not be contemplated at present. He pointed out that the residents were able to use the radio telegraph service. " Surely this country is not so hard up that a cable cannot be repaired," remarked Mr. A. S. Russell. Another member stated that the cost of repairs would not amount to more than £4O or £SO.
