NOTES ON THE RACING.

gay court promises well. EASY WIN BY LANDMARK. ORAPAI DEFEATS CONSENT. [BY TELEGRAPH.— FROM ARCHES.] WANGANUI, Thursday, three-year-old. Gay Court, who was at n good price, practically made a onehorse race of the Maiden Race, for he wen', to the front across the top from Jeon Ladosio and Lucky Moment, and then had no difficulty m winning by five lengths from Luclty Moment, who beat Barbacan by half-a-length. Haulbowline was running on in fourr.h posit j on ahead of Jean Ladosio. Actaeon and Cornerman. Gay Court is the hrst of Gamucourt'a progeny to win. and he looks like making a very useful horse. Lucky Moment shaped well, and Barbacan was closer at the finish thnn any other stage. She nnd Haulbowline can both be expected to improve and so can Pomp. Cornerman was running on at the end. but wan never really dangerous. Coon Song opened up a big break in the »,arly stage* of the Okehu Hack Hurdles, but he came back to the field as the result of a faulty jump at the third fence, at which stage Hynigreat and Gueresa were out of the contest, having been brought down at tho second fence by Garrick, who swerved badly Spearmiss went up to Coon Song' at the top and she just led at tho last fence, where Garrick, Okapua and Moerangi all had chances. Spearmiss stayed on well to win by a length and a-half from Garrick, who beat Okapua by a head. Desert Lad was finishing on in fourth position ahen-d 01 Moerangi and Coon Song. Moerangi and Desert Lad wero both a little unlucky, Moerangi being 6topped in this run fiom tho last fence. Hymgreat was goin,; really well when ho fell and Coon Song shaped well for a beginner. The Putlki Handicap. It was not a good field in the Putiki Hack Handicap, and the race proved easy for Landmark, who was third choice in the betting to Royal Black and Arrowzoge, whori H. Gray rode 9lb. over-weight. Flakewhito led for about five furlongs, when Landmark went up on the rails and Arrowzone on the outside. Flakewhite dropped back across the top where Royal Black moved up to third. Landmark was first into the straight and won in facile style from Royal Black, who finished on fairly well. Kissleas was a fair third, with Shooist and Arrowzone next. Landmark was always going like a winner and is an improved horse. Pewa and Juggle were the favourites for tho ISeafield Handicap and filled the dividend places in the reverse order. Just An Idea, Pedestal and Sight Draft were the uarly leaders and they came into the straight abreast, with Juggle and Pewa just in behind, while Atholspear. Easter Time and Vertigern were showing up on the outside. Juggle finished on well to win by a length and a-half from Pewa, with Vertigern half-a-length away third. Sight Draft,, Atholspear and Easter Time were next. Juggle was assisted by her physical fitnests at thw finish. Pewa and Vertigern are likely to improve with the race, and so is Easter Time, who did not begin well. Vertigern, after a slow beginning, had none the best of the running and was very wide out iit the turn.

Winner's Easy Task. Crcupier was backed down to odds-on for the Wanganui Guineas, and he realised exijectationa by winning with someuuiig in ruservo from King Colossus, who paid a fair price for second, and View Halloa. Croupier led for about half-a-mile when Cricket Bat went up fast to take the lead and King Colossus took third Dlace. Near the turn. King Colossus made a dash, but Gray was taking no risk of getting pocketed and once he moved, Croupier was in front in a flash. Nothing had a chance with Croupier at the end and he won hands down by halr-a-length from King Colossus, who 3thlled off View Halloa by a head. Childstudy came from a good way back to get fourth, and Cricket Bat, who stopped badlj l after being very injudiciously ridden, was filth. Zeebrugge lost any chance he possessed by being squeezed right back goinf; out of the straight. It was Croupier's sixth successive victory and he is undoubtedly a galloper of very good class. King Colossus and View Halloa both responded very gamely under pressure and they are goinj: to be very useful three-year-olds. Investors were right on the mark when the favourites, Knollmere and Curie, returned the dividends in the Durie Hack Handicap. Furlong and Dick Whittington made the running with Knollmere, Curie and Impetuous handy. Knollmere shot through on the rails at the turn and was all out at the finish to beat Curie by rf length. Ben Hur, finishing on. was a head away third and Esteem, always well up, was fourth. Next came Seneschal, Furlong and Chief Cook A Run on the Rails. Knollmere was assisted by his run on the nils, but might have won in any case. Curie, who carried olb ovqrweight. and Ben Hur both went very solid races. Esteem and Chief Cook are very likely improvers. Korolio got away very badly and leiler was toon squeezed back early. , . , Cessation, who was just a little less fancied than Merry Damon, scored narrowly in a hot finish in tho Maran.ii Handicap The pace was very slow early and Royal Game carried the field along to the home turn, where Little Doubt, Cessation. Merry Damon and Spear Lad were all handy. Cessation came through strongly at the distance and stalled off Merry Damon to win by a neck. Royal Game was a close third, with Little Doubt and Spear Lad right up. Cessation came round the home turn beUer than Merrv Damcn. who was on the outside, and this just made the difference. She was ridder in H. Gray's most, vigorous style and responded in the gamest possible fa Oraoai was backed down to odds-on for the Flying. Handicap and he duly materia Lei Aston rfl » b?
