SUVA'S WATER SUPPLY.
PUMPING PLANT ERECTED. GUARDING AGAINST SHORTAGE. [FRO.U Or It OWN CORRESPONDENT.] SUVA, Sept, 7. For many years Suva lived perilously near the border-line of a possible water famine. On more than one occasion the people were on short commons and fears were entertained that the town's supply would fail utterly. The Government, at a large expense, dug out a lmge reservoir which holds about three months' supply. But the population kept increasing and at last it was feared that even the new provision was not enough to preclude all chances of danger of a shortage. The Legislature therefore decided that a further supply should bo provided by a pumping plant which would tap a neverfailing supply in the upper Tamavua River. The sum of £IO,OOO was voted for the purpose and this week a trial run proved that half a million gallons daily can bo sent into the reservoir from a river pool into which a daily intake of 2,000.000 gallons is assured. The plant will be in full working order in three weeks' time.
