GRAND CHARITY BALL.

WHITE ENSIGN CLUB. EX-NAVAL MEN'S FUNCTION. Particularly gay and attractive was the scene presented in Scots Hall last evening, when the White Ensign Club, the members of which comprise ex-naval men, held a grand charity ball. Flags were used for !ho entire decorative scheme, those being hung round the walls of the ballroom and also lining tho entrance. The dance was held under the patronage of Rear-Admiral Geoffrey Blake, who arrived during the evening accompanied by Commander and Mrs. V. A. C. Crutchley, and Commander E. Lyon Berthon, with Mrs. Bertlion. Representatives of several kindred societies also attended the dance, these including the New Zealand Air Force, Mons Veterans, Auckland Returned Soldiers' Association, Takapuna Ex-servicemen, and the Legion of Frontiersmen. Many of tho representatives were in uniform, and these, together with the naval uniforms of other guests and many charming dance frocks, provided an attractive note of colour. Members of the St. Andrew's Ripe Band also attended tho dance in costume. Together with the Diomede and Blind Institute orchestras, they supplied popular dance music. The Highland Fling given by the Misses Jessie and Greta McLachlan and the Sh'ean Truibhais given by Miss Lola Kay, in Highland costume, added greatly to the pleasure of the evening, Pipe-Major McComb playing an appropriate accompaniment on the bagpipes. Tho hostesses and special guests present were:—Mrs. E. Lyon Berthon, who wore a frock of shell pink georgette with a deep vandyked yoke of pink lace; Mrs. V. A. C. Crutchley, in a frock of maroon lace; Mrs. A. B. Downing, black georgette with a black lace bolero; Mrs. 11. Davics. sea green satin; Mrs. C. Padley, primrose fischo net and inched taffeta; Miss L.
