AMATEUR BILLIARDS.
AUCKLAND CHAMPIONSHIP. FINAL MATCH COMMENCED. The final of the Auckland provincial amateur billiards championship, for the Billiards, Limited, Shield, was commenced at Messrs Billiards, Limited's sßowrooms. The finalists, M. D. White and E. V. Roberts, attracted a record gathering, including a number of ladies. The players soon settled down to their game, Roberta making a 20-odd break at his second cue. He improved on this soon afterwards, failing only after amassing a break of -11. He wag playing with confidence and gained a useful lead at the first iOO mark. White was also scoring steadily and by all-round play made a break of 52, just failing with a losing hazard and evening up the scores. Roberta continued to score freely and his next efiorta were runs of 20 and 31, a simple red winner being his downfall in the latter break. White then got a chance and he ran up to 32 with a variety of strokes. 'Roberts was having slightly the better of the play and retaliated with a run of 39. making the score at this stage 282 to 203 in his favour. He gained further ground shortly afterwards in breaks of 25 and 35. He mixed his game judiciously and played attractively. White decreased his opponent's lead by making breaks of 25 and 28. However, he was still a 100 points to the bad. A break of 27 was his next effort of note and hi' added a further run of 35. Roberts reached sessional points with a useful lead of 95 points. The session points were:—E. V. Roberts! 500; breaks of 27. 41. 21, 20, 20. 31, 39, 25, 2G, 35, 29. M. D. White, 403; breaks of 25, 52, 32. 23, 2S, 2S and 35. The final session will be played this evening, when ticket-holders only will be admitted.
