DEVONPORT BUS SERVICES.
Sir, —I wish to point out to No. 2 Transport Board a hardship which the Devonport Borough councillors are endeavouring to inflict on a section of the ratepayers at Cheltenham, in trying to upset the old bus route (which has been in existence for about a-quarter of a century), by obtaining the permission of the Transport Board to take the buses along part of William Street, which is only a side-street, into Tainui Road, instead of going straight through the remainder of Oxford Terrace and round into Tainui Road by Matai Road as at present. The plea of economy is the council's excuse for doing so. But the ratepayers fail to see where economy comes in, for there is no reason why Oxford Terrace should not be kept in as good order as any other road, as heavy rates are paid by the residents of same. William Street will also cost money ,for upkeep, besides which, tho choice trees which have been planted on each side of it, by a previous council, will inevitably have to be destroyed, thus wasting money spent on the purchase of and cost of planting same. Then again, money is being spent on Doipain Street (which is but a side-street with no bus traffic), for road, paths and even curbings. About a year ago an attempt was made to change the old bus route, but the residents concerned protested strongly and the Transport Board decided to allow tho old route to remain. We hope the members of the Transport Board will justly and fairly consider this matter, and once more decide in our favour. An Old Resident.
