THE COST OF EDUCATION.
Sir _Of late there has been much said on the subject of money going out from the Education Department, but I have seen no mention of money coming in. 1 understand it is estimated that each child at our secondary Stato schools costs the country between £2O and £26 per annum. If it is recognised that many who can afford to pay school fees so prefer the training given by the secondary Government schools that they send their children to them without any payment, it is surely not reactionary to suggest that they should bo called upon to pay fees—not necessarily the whole, but at anyrate, some proportion of tho cost. Cannot these schools bo brought into line with other social services? Those attending tho hospitals give according to their means. Those who cannot* need not; those who can, must. No doubt there are difficulties, but surely they could be adjusted. Will any political party have courage to see that men well able to shoulder their financial responsibilities to their children in tho matter of education should be called upon to do so ? B.
