WOMEN'S INSTITUTES.

Hukerenui.—The September meeting of the Hukerenui Institute was held at th» residence of Mrs. Bettesworth. A competition provided by Mesdames Highfc and McLelland was won by Mrs. Radd and a game which caused much merriment was provided by Miss M. Radd. Several community songs, led by Mrs. Highfc, were sung, and afternoon tea was provided, the hostesses being Mesdames Hight, McLelland and Bettesworth. Manawahe.—At a meeting of the institute a vote of condolence was passed to Mr. Rimmer and family in their recent loss. Remits were brought up for discussion, all but one being supported by the meeting. It was proposed that Mrs. Stowers and Mrs. Rendall be sent as delegates to the federation meeting in Matata. Miss Leila Rendall demonstrated the making of a novel butterfly cushion. The competition, any . article from one yard of cretonne, was a great success, Miss K. C. Tunnicliff being the winner with, a novel stocking bag, and Mrs. R. J. Tunnicliff second with a mending bag in the shape of a duck. Mrs. Wettenhall was present, and gave a short address on institutes and federation matters. During the afternoon 'Mrs. Erskine rendered two songs, which were very well received. Tea was served by the hostesses, Mesdames Erskine, Mikkelson and Farrelly. Matakana. —At the monthly meeting of the Matakana Institute twojnew members were elected, bringing the membership of this institute to 40. As the meeting was the last to be held before the third birthday of the institute there were final arrangements to be made for the entertainment. During the afternoon there was an exhibition 91 spring flowers, many beautiful blooms being shown] The competition for the day was won by Mrs. A. E. Allan, sen. Hostesses were:— Mesdames W. Sharp, P. Withers and C. Worthing. »

Papamoa.—At- a meeting of the Papamoa Institute Mesdames R. McXaughton and Teague were elected delegates to attend the council meeting at Matata this month. A competition by Miss Morton was won by Mrs. Lees. * A beautiful display of needlework was made. Mrs. Perkins demonstrated mat-making, which caused great interest. An account is to be opened in the Savings Bank for the first Papamoa institute baby. The " bring and buy" stall did well. The members are catering for the luncheon and afternoon tea for the visiting huntsmen. Tea was served by the spinsters. Te Awamutu.—The Te Awamutu institute co-operated with the lady members of St. John's Horticultural Society in promoting a " husbands' night," which proved quite a success. Mrs. C. G, Downes (president) invited Messrs. D. McArthur and O. S. West to judge an array of articles of which the cost of making was not to exceed one shilling. The judges the prize to Mrs. O. O'Brien. The Glee Club, under the baton of Mrs. C. F. Battson, rendered a number oPbright choruses and vocal solo 3 were contributed by Mesdames R. Metcalfe and E. Hooper and Miss Rene Bell (Pirongia). Miss K. Savill played the accompaniments. Mr. A. J. Shepherd provided a very interesting ten-minute chat on daffodil culture. A play reading, " Between the Soup and the Savoury," caused much amusement. The parts were taken by Mesdames W. Locke, Heath and Reese.

Te Kauwhata. —Remits to come before the council meeting in October were discussed at a meeting of the institute, and Mrs. Reston was appointed delegate to the meeting. Mrs. Gibson, of Thames, gave an interesting demonstration of beading. In the sugar bag competition, Mrs. Roy Charlton won the prize for the best article, Mrs. Ryrie for the most original, - and Mrs. Andrews for the amount, of work put into her exhibit. The articles were put- on the sales table. Mrs. Palmer won the prize for the best six months programme. Hostesses for the afternoon were Mrs. Partridge, Miss Waterhouse, Mrs. Watt and Mrs. Palmer. Taupiri.—'The Taupiri Women's Institute entertained about 250 at a very successful social evening held in the local hall on Thursday. The programme comprised a number of dances, various games and competitions, and musical and elocutionary items. Duets'were sung by Mrs. S. Clarke and Mr. Firth and by Mrs. Yollemaire and Miss A. Waring; character sketches were given by Mrs. Hastings (Auckland) and recitations by Mrs. Fow (Gordonton) and little Fredda Murphy. A playetto enacted by Misses G. Jones, A. Ja,ckways and Mrs. F. C. Day caused much amusement. Winners o? various competitions were:—Mr. W. Lovell, Miss G. A. Jones, Miss V. Wilson, Mr. J. Carbines, Miss Duck, Mr. R. Taylor, Miss H. Houton and Mr. Smith. The accompanist was Miss Charles and dance music was played by Mr. G. Clarke and Mr. H. Wilson. Mr. W. Waring assisted in 'other directions. Whangarei.—The Titoki Institute recently, when each member contributed to the roll-call on " household hints.
