FIFTY YEARS AGO.

EXTRACTS FROM THE HERALD. The following are extracts from the New Zealand Herald of September 14, 1881: Gold to the value of £57,454 was shipped yesterday by the Bank of New Zealand for San Francisco. Owing to rececv exchanges in the silver currency of the United States there is a great demand there for gold, which is bringing an advanced price. , It is well that Mr. Gisborne should have brought under the notice of the House of Representatives the conditions connected with the commission of the Governor, Sir Arthur Gordon, who left yesterday for Fiji. Mr. Gisborne thinks these conditions would be brought into operation by the Governor's protracted absence and would eventually prevent his resumption of office. Mr. Gisborne s reasoning appears to be too narrow. Admitting its accuracy, its implication that by being absent from New Zealand to more than month and not appointing a deputy Sir Arthur would cease , to Governor does not seem to us to be t inevitable consequence. Holding the opinion he does, however, it was evidently Mr. Gisborne's duty to make his objection and it will have the rfesult of removing any obscurity. . Fighting has begun .in Afghanistan. The Amir's forces encamped in a strong position within eight miles of Kandahar and the artillery opened fire on'Ayono Khan's troops.
