UNEMPLOYMENT RELIEF. SUBURBAN ALLOCATIONS. EFFECT ON SINGLE MEN. As a result, of the action of the Unemployment Board in reducing its allocation by 20 per cent, tho Mount Eden Borough Council lias decided not to employ single men and men not resident in the borough on relief works this week. Married men will be engaged as usual. It, was announced by the Mayor, Mr. T. McNab, on Saturday evening, that the council had been able to make an arrangement whereby practically every man who was engaged on relief work in the borough would be given the same amount of work every month as before. The arrangement would be put into operation after this week. Everything possible would bo done for men resident in the borough, and considerable time had been spent in inspecting every unemployed man's card to sort out those who should not be on the list.
The Mount Albert Borough Council has announced that there will be no relief work for single men until further notice. Married men will be employed as usual. Tho Mayor, Mr. W. F. Stilwell, stated last evening that the council had spent £B2O on relief work last week and the Unemployment Board's allocation for this week was £6OO. lie had sent, a telegram of protest to the Minister of Labour, tho Hon. S. G. Smith, but had received a reply on Saturday morning that the allocation made was tho best the board could do.
QUESTION OF JURISDICTION. PUBLIC WORKS CONTROL URGED. [BY TELEGRAPH. —PRESS ASSOCIATION.] DUNEDIN, Saturday. The Chamber of Commerce has sent a letter to the Prime Minister and the Minister of Labour, emphasising tho continued wasteful expenditure upon unemployment relief works, and suggesting that the unemployed should be placed under tho jurisdiction of tho Public Works Department, which could classify the men and place as many as possible upon piecework.
