IMPROVEMENT OF STOCK.

QUESTION OF "SCRUB" SIRES. PROHIBITING SALES SUGGESTED. A proposal to improve the standard of stock in New Zealand by the elimination of "scrub" sires from sales lias been made by the Canterbury Agricultural and Pastoral Association. In a letter received by the committee of the Auckland Agricultural and Pastoral Association yesterday, the Canterbury association stated that for some time it had given attention to the necessary steps for improving the Dominion's flocks and herds. By its proposal, the association did not wish to set. up an aristocracy of breeders in New Zealand or to prevent a farmer from using animals which he-might breed himself and which were suited to his type of country. However, it was in regard to the sales of males that an improvement could bo made, and it was believed it would be wise to prohibit the sale of animals which were inimical to tho welfare of the country's livestock.

The association stated that if a reasonable degree of unanimity among associations and breed societies was icached, it would prepare a scheme on the lines of the proposal. Support for the scheme was needed before legislation to carry it into effect was sought. Agreement with the object of'the Canterbury association was expressed by members, and it was decided to support the proposal.
