Passengers travelling on the Main Trunk expresses to and from Wellington on Monday will have the opportunity of testing the new and improved type of carriage /which the department proposes using to a limited extent on. the Main Trunk line. These carriages are similar to those used on the Rotorua de luxe express, and represent a great improvement on the usual type of first-class carriage. Each carriage will accommodate 29 people. The seats are upholstered in moquette, and their springing and other arrangements make them much more comfortable than ordinary seals. New ideas have been put into operation in regard to lighting, heating and ventilation. The windows are of new design, and eome of them are fitted with miniature fanlights. The entrances at each end of the carriage are patterned on the British style. The passenger enters from the side instead of mounting the platform and then gaining access through a central door. The carriages were built at Otahuhu and were sent to Wellington about three weeks ago. Starting from Monday, there will he . two of the new carriages, a smoker and a non-smoker, on the limited expresses to fand from Auckland, and there will be one non-smoker on each of the ordinary expresses.
