CRIMES OF VIOLENCE.
GREAT INCREASE IN FRANCE. CONVICTED MEN TRANSPORTED. (Received September 11, 5.5 p.m.) PARIS, Sept. 10. The recent increase in serious crimes of violence in France has been so great that the convict ship Martiniere was forced to make a special trip, to carry 300 men who were sentenced to transportation to Devil's Island.
From the prison to the ship, the prisoners, chained in pairs, marched between troops and gendarmes with fixed bayonets.
The men will be in cages during the sea trip, and will be released from the cages only to expiate their crimes by working in chains for the rest of their lives under a tropical sun.
