Mr. John Whall, the blind editor of the Middlesex Chronicle, who has died at Hounslow, had held the position for some forty years, his predecessor being the lata Mr. William U Queux, the water of mystery stories.
The Publishers' Circular states that the value of the book exports of Great Britain last year was £4.395,732, a decrease of £507,000 in the total for 1929, which was a record year. Tho Commonwealth of Australia last year imported £300.000 less of books than in 1929.
Miss Fryn Tennyson Jesse, who recently published a new booic called " Solanga Stories," is the wiio of Mr. H M Harwood. the well-known theatrical manager. Miss Jesse was originally trained as a painter and exhibited works in Liverpool and Leeds. Liter she took up journalism. Dr. Puck Munthe, author of " The Story of San Micliele," has shown his love" for birds by giving tho income ot the Swedish edition of his book, about £667, for a special reservation or sancturary for migratory birds in Sweden The income from the English and American editions will be spent in a similar way in Ital^.
\ message from Rome reports that a portrait of Dante earlier than any of the previously known paintings of the poet has been discovered in a fresco in a church in Pistoria, where mural paintings and frescoes of the thirteenth and fourteenth centuries are being uncovered in restoration work. Another portrait, bearing the name of Petrarch, is by the side of that of Dante.
